Job summary

Huawei Research And Development UK Limited in Edinburgh is seeking a Software Research Engineer to join the Retrieval and Agent Intelligence (RAI) team, with a core focus on advancing cutting-edge agentic AI technologies.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in research-driven environments and hands-on involvement in designing, developing and iterating research prototypes and production-ready systems.

Qualifications

• Degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, NLP, Statistics, Mathematics or related technical discipline.
• Minimum 3 years of hands-on project experience in software engineering delivering complex technical systems.
• Solid algorithmic research foundation and strong code implementation skills; deep understanding of LLM principles, agent architecture design, cognitive reasoning, and planning mechanisms.
• Algorithmic mindset for addressing non-deterministic and open-ended problems.
• Proficiency in Test Driven Development and modern software engineering practices (clean, reusable, high-quality code, CI/CD).
• Hands-on experience with Python, Docker and Git.
• Proactive learning attitude and ability to quickly master new technologies and research domains.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills in distributed, cross-cultural teams.

Responsibilities

• Bridge between AI research and robust software architecture, translating findings into scalable engineering systems.
• Advance agent AI technologies including memory, planning, self-improvement, and knowledge management.
• Drive end-to-end engineering delivery of agent systems from data prep to deployment and post-launch support.
• Contribute to technology analysis, roadmaps and exploration of frontier directions like multi-agent coordination.
• Contribute to open-source projects and community building in agentic AI domain.
• Support deployment, operation and iteration of developed agent systems and services.
