Job summary

Acron Aviation Training Systems in Crawley, West Sussex, is seeking a Hardware Engineer to lead or contribute to electrical hardware development for flight simulators, blending mechanical bias with aerospace standards.

You will design, validate, and document electrical systems, work with cross-functional teams, ensure safety-critical reliability, and mentor junior engineers in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.

Qualifications

  • BEng/MEng (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Desirable Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards chartership with the IET or equivalent institution.
  • Minimum 5–10 years of experience in an electrical design role, ideally within the simulation, aerospace, defence, or capital equipment sectors.
  • Demonstrable experience designing three-phase and single-phase power distribution systems, including switchgear selection, protection coordination, and cable sizing calculations.
  • Proficiency in electrical CAD tools for schematic capture, wiring diagram production, and panel layout.
  • Practical understanding of EMC principles, including shielding, filtering, grounding for EMC, cable segregation, and experience supporting or leading EMC test campaigns.
  • Experience with computing system electrical integration, including rack power distribution, cooling provisions, and high-density signal/data cabling.
  • Sound knowledge of BS 7671, the Low Voltage Directive, EMC Directive, and applicable harmonised standards.
  • Experience working within a gated design process (concept through to production release) with formal review milestones.
  • Familiarity with aerospace and European standards and regulations including relevant Mechanical and Electrical Standards
  • Strong problem-solving skills with experience in hardware troubleshooting, testing, and validation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead or work within multi-disciplinary teams, with excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience in project management or leadership of engineering teams is highly desirable for senior roles.
  • Flight simulation, avionics, or aerospace systems experience is a strong advantage, although design and development engineers from industries with transferable skills would be welcome.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or contribute to the design and development of Electrical hardware solutions for flight simulators with a mechanical bias, ensuring alignment with customer requirements and industry standards.
  • Drive the development of innovative hardware capabilities, focusing on quality, performance, and reliability in aerospace environments.
  • Oversee or support the creation of detailed technical specifications, schematics, and models for mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Manage projects or work within cross-functional teams, collaborating with software engineers, systems engineers, and project managers to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Ensure that all hardware components comply with aerospace industry standards and regulatory requirements, ensuring safety-critical operations.
  • Conduct testing, validation, and troubleshooting of hardware systems to ensure they meet performance and reliability standards.
  • Lead or support the evaluation of new technologies and materials, driving continuous innovation in the development of flight simulation products.
  • Provide technical leadership or contribute to mentoring junior engineers, fostering a collaborative, knowledge-sharing environment.
  • Engage with suppliers to manage the sourcing and integration of mechanical and electrical components.
  • Ensure the delivery of projects on time, within budget, and in accordance with customer expectations.
