Advanced Biomedical Scientist

The Senior Biomedical Scientist will work with other seniors in the team responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Microbiology department. The role involves providing a cost-effective quality service through review of processes and policies, interpreting technical laboratory tests and diagnostic processes. They must also act as a line manager for laboratory staff and provide technical support and advice to the Microbiology consultants.

Main duties of the job

The Advanced Band 7 Biomedical Scientist in Bacteriology plays a vital role in delivering a high-quality, patient-centered diagnostic service by overseeing daily laboratory operations in line with Trust protocols, safety regulations, and quality standards. Responsibilities include processing and interpreting microbiological samples, maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment, leading method evaluations, supporting audits and quality initiatives, and participating in out-of-hours services. The role also involves communication with stakeholders, training junior staff, contributing to service improvements, and ensuring compliance with standards such as UKAS, COSHH, and ISO 15189. The post holder maintains professional competence through continuous development and adheres to HCPC requirements.

Person Specification
Education, Qualifications, and Training
  • oBSc (Hons) Biomedical Science (IBMS approved) or equivalent.
  • oCurrent HCPC registration.
  • oIBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology.
  • oEvidence of ongoing CPD.
  • oMSc Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
  • oHigher Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology.
  • oTraining in Quality Management and Health & Safety.
  • oManagement qualification.
Experience
  • oExtensive experience in all areas of Medical Microbiology laboratory work.
  • oManagement experience in Microbiology.
  • oExperience with UKAS assessments.
  • oExperience working independently and out-of-hours.
  • oExperience in Quality Management and Health & Safety management.
  • oBacteriology training experience.
Knowledge
  • oAdvanced knowledge of Bacteriology and Virology.
  • oProblem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • oFamiliarity with LIMS systems, especially WinPath Enterprise.
  • oProficiency in Microsoft Office.
