Job description

Due to an internal promotion of staff, Cheltenham Town FC Academy is welcoming applications for an Academy Senior Physiotherapist who will oversee the planning and implementation of our Academy Medical strategy and have responsibility for day-to-day management of the professional development phase, medical planning and delivery.

The role would suit someone seeking to gain full-time experience within an Academy setting. The ideal candidate will hold a minimum BSc in Physiotherapy (essential) and Intermediate Trauma Medical Management in Football (ITMMiF) (you must be willing to complete the course). The candidate must have or be in the process of obtaining membership to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). The role is full-time (40 hours a week). The role requires flexibility to work around the PDP schedule and Saturday & evening fixtures.

The successful candidate will be joining an ambitious Category 3 Academy with a dedicated and experienced staff that is striving to be the best they possibly can be.

Direct Reports: Academy Lead Sports Therapist

Build Relationships with

Internal: Academy Manager, Lead PDP coach, Head of Coaching, Lead Sports Therapist, Lead Phase Coaches, Coaches (Part Time), Heads of department, First Team staff, Player Care Manager and Players.

External: Premier League & Football League, FA, Universities/colleges, FAYCD, and PFA.

Salary: Subject to experience

Working pattern and Work base - Full time (40 hours)

  • Flexible working arrangements/hours.
  • Required to work outside of normal office hours, at evenings and weekends, on bank holidays and public holidays.
  • Required to work across different sites.

Travel: Regular travel to fixtures, meetings and other events in connection with the performance of the duties.

Overall purpose of the job

Implement, manage, and coordinate the sports medicine service for players and staff in line with EPPP requirements as outlined in the Academy Performance Plan for Sports Science and Medicine. The senior physiotherapist will have responsibility for the day-to-day management of the PDP medical planning and delivery.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

Personal Development

  • Undertake self-development to ensure knowledge in relation to all aspects of physiotherapy is up-to-date and forward thinking.
Sports Science & Medicine
  • Provide training and match day medical management for PDP (U18) phase
    • Player monitoring (wellness), injury assessment, data collection & review, injury management, rehabilitation, training & match day emergency pitch side first aid
    • Attend external consultations with players and parents
    • Work with the Academy Lead Sport Scientist to provide specific physical development training sessions for players
    • Contribute to the delivery of the SEP apprenticeship programme
  • Provide support and guidance to the academy sports science and medical staff on the phase and age-specific individual rehabilitation programmes, injury prevention strategies, data collection and reviewing the outcomes.
  • In collaboration with sports science, design and manage an injury prevention/prehabilitation programme for all the phases that is progressive.
  • Implement, manage, and coordinate individualised screening and prehabilitation for players across all age groups (U9-U18)
    • Work with the academy sports science and medical department to perform testing, collect data and present insights for all academy players.
    • Manage and coordinate player cardiac screenings (U15-U19)
  • Manage and coordinate injury clinics across all age groups
  • Communicate with players, parents and coaching staff with regards to injury progress and return to play times
  • Review and develop the Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
  • Meetings Responsibilities:
    • Report updates and findings to the academy management team and departmental meetings
    • Attend Academy Management meetings
    • Attend PDP MDT meetings
    • Attend PDP Player review meetings
    • Chair monthly Sport Science and Medical department meetings (Sport Science & Medical)
    • Chair monthly medical department meeting (all Academy medical staff)
  • Ensure the medical Academy EFL Youth Development Rules are satisfied and documented on the clubs audit tool
  • Record all data and update medical notes on KML iP in line with the EFL Youth Development Rules and HCPC requirements
  • Conduct equipment checks relating to the role and stock take medical supplies
  • Lead and deliver specific internal Medical CPD with in and across departments

Such other duties as may be appropriate to achieve the objectives of the post and to assist the Academy Manager.

  • Providing physiotherapy for young athletes within the framework of the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP)
  • Providing physiotherapy for young athletes within the NHS
  • Working as a member of a multi disciplinary team

Personal Qualities

Other Requirements

  • Have a full clean driving licence
  • DBS clearance
