Job summary

Refine Education is seeking a SEND Teaching Assistant to support a pupil in a secondary school with non-verbal communication and complex needs (PMLD). You will help the pupil use Makaton, PECS, symbols or communication aids and assist with sensory, physical and learning needs.

The role requires patience, resilience and the ability to stay calm when a pupil is distressed or when behaviours occur. Training in Team Teach, Makaton, PECS or similar is an advantage, and strong collaboration with

Qualifications

Patience, resilience and a calm, consistent approach when supporting a pupil with complex needs.
Ability to read non-verbal cues and build trust with a pupil who communicates without words.
Strong communication to liaise with teachers, SENCOs, therapists and families.
Experience or willingness to work in a challenging SEND environment with safeguarding focus.

Responsibilities

Provide dedicated, individual 1:1 support to a non-verbal pupil with complex needs in a secondary school.
Help the pupil communicate using non-verbal methods (Makaton, PECS, symbols, objects of reference, or communication aids).
Support sensory, physical and learning needs and enable participation in school life as independently as possible.
Stay calm and resilient when behaviors occur; follow school plans and safeguarding guidance.
