We are delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for a passionate and dedicated Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist SLCN (Speech, Language and Communication Needs) school in Twickenham, providing dedicated 1:1 support to a pupil with a Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) profile.

This is a deeply rewarding role for someone who is calm, patient and relationship-focused, someone who understands that for pupils with SEMH needs, the relationship between pupil and support staff is often the single most important factor in their ability to engage, feel safe and make progress.

About the Role

You will work on a dedicated 1:1 basis with a pupil presenting with an SEMH profile within a specialist SLCN school setting, providing consistent, nurturing and highly personalised support throughout the school day. Working closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider MDT, you will help your pupil to regulate emotionally, access learning and develop greater independence and confidence in a communication-rich environment.

The SLCN setting means you will also be working alongside Speech and Language Therapists and other specialists, giving you access to a highly skilled and supportive team around both you and the pupil.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a pupil with an SEMH profile throughout the school day
  • Build a consistent, trusting and positive relationship with the pupil to support their emotional regulation and sense of safety
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, SLTs and wider MDT to implement the pupil's EHCP and individual support plan
  • Use de-escalation strategies and positive behaviour support techniques to manage challenging behaviour calmly and effectively
  • Support the pupil's communication and language development within the specialist SLCN environment
  • Help the pupil to access learning, develop independence and participate in school life as fully as possible
  • Monitor and record the pupil's progress and behaviour, feeding back regularly to the class teacher and SENCO
  • Liaise sensitively and professionally with parents and carers
  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety and school-specific policies at all times
About You
  • Previous experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs - essential
  • Experience working in a 1:1 support role within a school setting - desirable
  • Understanding of SEMH profiles and the impact on learning, behaviour and wellbeing
  • Knowledge of de-escalation strategies and positive behaviour support approaches
  • Experience or familiarity with SLCN and communication-led approaches - desirable
  • A calm, patient and nurturing approach with the ability to remain composed in challenging situations
  • Ability to build consistent, trusting relationships with vulnerable young people
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Resilient, reliable and committed to the wellbeing and progress of the pupil in your care
  • Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification preferred but not essential
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of all pupils
