Norsk Hydro is seeking a highly skilled welding specialist to develop, qualify, and execute welding activities for structural components in railway applications. You will lead WPS development, optimize welding parameters, and ensure compliance with rail standards while supporting automotive sector technology choices and site guidance.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or materials science or related field.
  • Hands-on welding experience with MIG, TIG, and FSW in rail or aluminium environments.
  • Knowledge of railway welding standards and quality requirements.
  • Understanding of aluminium materials, especially 6xxx alloys.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and structured thinking.

Responsabilités

  • Support feasibility assessments for welding during RFQs and project phases.
  • Develop and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and qualifications.
  • Define and optimize welding parameters with production teams.
  • Ensure compliance with EN 15085, ISO 3834 and customer requirements.
  • Provide on-site technical support and troubleshoot welding issues.
  • Lead root cause analyses for defects and drive continuous improvement.
  • Define inspection and testing plans and support audits and certifications.
  • Guide sites on welding technologies and industrialization best practices.

Role Purpose

The role is responsible for supporting the development, qualification, and execution of welding activities for structural components in railway applications (MIG, TIG, FSW). It combines deep technical welding expertise with strong knowledge of standards, materials, and quality requirements specific to the rail sector. This role plays a key part in ensuring compliance with key railway standards such as EN 15085, and ISO 3834 and ensures compliance with other quality standards, HSE regulations, and customer requirements.

In addition, the role supports the Automotive Sector in the selection of appropriate technologies, cost evaluation, and serial equipment planning, while also guiding, advising, and challenging the production sites.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Support feasibility assessments for welding during RFQs and project phases

What Will Make You Successful
  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Materials Science, or related field
  • Strong hands-on experience in welding (MIG, TIG, FSW), ideally in rail or aluminium environments
  • Knowledge of railway welding standards and quality requirements
  • Understanding of aluminium materials (especially 6xxx alloys) and manufacturing processes
  • Strong analytical skills and a structured, problem-solving mindset
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating across teams and functions
  • Fluent English (German/French is an advantage)
