The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for its Legal Directorate (JU) – EU Operations Department (OPS-EU) – Northern Europe Division (NE) - Austria and Germany Unit (AT-DE), at its headquarters in Luxembourg: TRAINEE
Duration: 5 months (fixed start date: 1st September/October 2025)

Objective of the traineeship

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is looking for a trainee to support its Legal Directorate’s work on finance documents for its lending operations in Northern Europe, i.e. in Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden and the EFTA countries. The focus of the traineeship should be the support of lending operations in Germany and Austria.


You will join a team of eleven lawyers and three assistants that supports the EIB's lending operations in these countries and the economic growth and cohesion in the region. The team is responsible for the drafting and negotiation of lending projects that are linked to the EIB's goals as the EU's Climate Bank, such as wind farms, research and development of green technology, or water sanitation.

Responsibilities
Under the oversight of the supervisor and team members responsible for specific areas, you will be expected to perform the following main tasks:
  • Carry out legal research in relation to the new developments of banking law in the relevant jurisdictions covered by the Division;
  • Get familiar with the EIB finance documents and legal aspects of the EIB operations particularly in line with environmental and social considerations and with EIB procedures and legal issues;
  • Review available in-house precedent documents (in English, or German or in another language the trainee has knowledge of) and collect and classify internal know-how and 'tacit' knowledge;
  • Compile standard form documentation, checklists, perform legal process analysis;
  • Conduct research (whenever necessary), both with respect to internal processes and procedures, as well as certain matters of law typically found in finance transactions or in which the trainee has already some knowledge or in areas that the trainee wants to develop;
  • Translate legal documents.
Academic qualifications and professional skills
  • Final year of studies or University degree (Master’s level or equivalent) in law from a Member State of the European Union (EU).
  • Specialisation preferably in banking law, corporate law, EU law, environmental law or other relevant areas would be an advantage, as would knowledge of other legal systems.
  • Knowledge of the EIB’s mission, institutional set-up, policies and activities.
  • No prior work experience is required; limited and relevant previous experience (no more than 12 months as a general rule) is an asset.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and/or French. A very good knowledge of German would be a distinct advantage.
