Safran Power Units develops Fuel Cell Systems (FCS) that generate electricity from hydrogen and oxygen (air), without noise or pollutant emissions. The group is working on PEMFC-HT (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell – High Temperature) technology. In aeronautical applications, energy production systems must meet specific cyclic usage profiles, including frequent startups and shutdowns, often multiple times a day. These cycles, involving thermal and electrochemical transients, are major aging factors for fuel cells.
The CIFRE thesis, in partnership with LEMTA (Laboratoire Énergies & Mécanique Théorique et Appliquée), UMR 7563 of the University of Lorraine and CNRS, aims to understand phenomena limiting the performance and durability of high-temperature fuel cells. Focus will be on local phenomena at the cell scale during steady and transient regimes, especially during start/stop phases, power cycling, and temperature ramping.
Experimental work combined with physical models will establish links between operating parameters, local conditions, material degradation mechanisms, and control strategies.
You hold an engineering or Master’s degree in Energy, Electrochemistry, Materials, or Thermal sciences.
You demonstrate autonomy, interdisciplinary teamwork skills, and critical thinking to connect physical phenomena with experimental observations.
You possess a good scientific English level (publications, conferences).
Experience in PEMFC or electrochemical systems from internships or research projects is a plus.
