Job Description:

Who are we?

Biomemory, founded in 2021, boldly stands at the crossroads of biotechnology and computing, driven by a passion for sustainability. As pioneers in DNA data storage, we confront the cost, real-estate and environmental impact of traditional data centers. Our secret weapon? Harnessing the power of synthetic biology, automation and mass-parallelization to build Data Storage equipment craft using enduring DNA strands as the data storage media fragments, stored as timeless polymers—no energy required.

After securing a €17M Series A in early 2025, we are now entering a high-growth phase — aiming to more than double our team from 22 to 50 by the end of 2025.

Join us in rewriting the future of data storage! ??

ABOUT THE ROLE ?

As a System Chief Technology Officer (CTO) you will be responsible for leading the system-level strategy, development, and integration of Biomemory products, leading the R&D and the deliverables for a successful commercial launch. You will foster innovation and maintain a competitive edge in the DNA data storage industry, including cost-effectiveness.

The development of Biomemory’s products will require a tight collaboration and continuous adaptation between the System CTO, Chief Science Officer, the COO, and the VP of Industrialization and Partnerships.

As a System CTO, you will lead the system architecture to match the product and market requirements. You will own the system’s detailed specifications and be responsible for the integration & validation, including the integration of the biotech components into the industrialized systems. These biotech components are developed and made ready-for-integration by the CSO and his teams.

Key Responsabilities

  • Own the company's hardware and software architecture and related R&D strategy, as well as the system’s integration and verification.
  • Assess, organize, and run the R&D team accordingly.
  • Own Biomemory’s product development technical activities until production readiness.
  • Be actively contributing to strengthen Biomemory's technical reputation in the market.
  • In collaboration with Biomemory’s Executive Staff, help bridge the biotech and IT cultures .

DESIRED OUTCOMES & MISSIONS ?

  • System strategy and roadmap (technical, staffing, budget): take ownership of the product execution plan, possibly optimize/develop it, to enable an efficient implementation of the strategy, yielding a timely product launch that aligns with the company’s business goals.
  • Organization: shape and staff up an efficient and highly motivated organization , with the skill sets and capabilities required for an efficient execution of the roadmap.
  • Product Development: lead the product development, from concept to market-ready product, integrating the deliverables from the Biotech team, the partners, and the subcontractors, achieving all milestones on time and within budget. The System CTO will deliver quarterly prioritization plans for product development activities, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and that the most valuable product features are developed first to meet market demands and strategic business objectives.
  • Intellectual Property : establish and oversee a robust IP strategy related to system, hardware, or software innovations .
  • Technical Reputation : actively contribute to the company's technical credibility and visibility by authoring and having your team write and publish white papers, speak at industry conferences, and contribute to peer-reviewed journals. Together with your team, you will contribute to the overall technology, product, and market intelligence of Biomemory, by regularly sharing collected information and knowledge.
  • Team Management : develop and execute a hiring plan of your team that aligns with the company's growth strategy and technical needs. This should see an increase of 15 persons in the department's workforce within the first 18 months. High retention rates should be maintained, and you will also ensure that new hires meet the technical and cultural benchmarks set by the company.
  • Team Development : establish objectives for the team members and maintain a transparent, systematic reporting process that delivers comprehensive monthly updates on technical activities, progress, and challenges to the executive staff , ensuring they are well-informed for strategic decision-making.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS ?

Direct reports

The Systems Team (covering hardware and software) of roughly 13 people reports to the System CTO. There are currently three people working on robotics and bioinformatics. There are a further 10 consultants in the UK working as Biomemory's technology partner. Their deliverables will need to be transferred to Biomemory.

These fields are encompassing IT and data storage, software and firmware development, electronics and microelectronics, microfluidics, micro-robotics and automation, as well as new materials.
  • 8-10+ years of experience in system development and integration in a global management role within IT, Computing, Data Storage, large medical electronics equipment, test & measurement equipment, eventually Networking or Telecom systems.
  • You worked for one or more recognized equipment makers or system integrators and have experience with both hardware and software components, ideally in a context using microfluidics (life science, printing, micro-robotics).
  • Experience with system architecture, system integration, and disruptive hardware technology development: You led the development of a disruptive hardware and software solution from risk-mitigation feasibility studies to the creation of end-to-end functional prototypes, leading to industrialized products.
