The ‘Zendesk Analytics Prototyping’ (ZAP) team is seeking an experienced Staff Data Engineer to support CRM measurements, insights, and promote a data-centric approach to customer support tools and operations. The role involves building and maintaining robust datasets and developing insights to improve Zendesk’s support operations.

The candidate will collaborate with Software Development Engineers and Business Intelligence Engineers to develop high-quality data pipelines and manage the team’s data lake. The work includes developing curated datasets, applying architectural and data modeling best practices, primarily focusing on Data Warehouse solutions in Snowflake using technologies such as dbt, Airflow, and Terraform.

What you’ll be doing:

1. Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to understand business requirements, define analytics outcomes, and design data models.
2. Develop, automate, and maintain scalable ELT pipelines in our Data Warehouse for reliable business reporting.
3. Design and build ELT-based data models using SQL and dbt.
4. Identify and implement process improvements, automate manual processes, and optimize data delivery.
5. Work with data and analytics experts to enhance data system functionality.

What you bring to the role

Basic Qualifications:

• 8+ years of experience in building, maintaining, and working with data pipelines and ETL processes in big data environments.
• Extensive SQL experience in data modeling and analysis.
• Hands-on production experience with dbt and knowledge of data modeling methodologies like Kimball and Inmon.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Java, or Scala.
• Experience with cloud columnar databases (Google BigQuery, Amazon Redshift, Snowflake), SQL query writing, and familiarity with various databases.
• Experience supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependencies, and ensuring efficient data processing.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Proactive problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in ambiguous situations.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with BigQuery, Snowflake, or similar cloud data warehouses.
• Familiarity with AI tools and techniques for data analysis and transformation.
• Completed projects using dbt.
• Knowledge of Lean/6 Sigma principles and CRM analytics.
