Job summary

bsport is hiring a Staff Backend Engineer to shape our product's technical direction across Barcelona and Paris teams. You will tackle scalable distributed systems, own cross-team problems from framing to delivery, and mentor engineers while driving architecture and observability improvements.

You will work with Python, Django, PostgreSQL, AWS and related tooling, helping us scale, while embracing AI-enabled engineering workflows with pragmatism and ownership.

Qualifications

• Extensive backend experience with Python; Django is a plus.
• Designing and evolving distributed systems at scale for millions of users.
• Able to challenge decisions across the stack from data modeling to infrastructure.
• Experience leading technical initiatives across multiple teams without formal authority.

Responsibilities

About the role:

As a Staff Backend Engineer at bsport, you will play a key role in shaping the technical direction of our product and engineering organisation.

We are growing our engineering teams in Barcelona and have multiple opportunities for Staff Engineers across different product and technical domains. Depending on your experience, technical interests, and the challenges you are most excited about, you may join one of several teams working on different parts of the bsport platform.

Our teams tackle a wide range of technical challenges, from building core platform capabilities and scalable distributed systems to developing product-facing services, data-intensive systems, and AI-powered capabilities.

Regardless of the team you join, your role will go beyond the boundaries of a single service or squad. You will help us solve complex technical problems, shape architectural decisions, and build systems that can support bsport's next stage of growth.

What will be your impact:

As a Staff Backend Software Engineer, you will:

• Drive technical strategy and architecture within your team and across the wider engineering organisation, designing scalable services, distributed systems, and shared capabilities.
• Own complex, cross-team technical problems from initial problem framing through implementation, challenging assumptions and making pragmatic decisions across the full stack - from data models and APIs to networking and infrastructure.
• Set architectural direction and establish patterns, standards, and best practices that allow multiple engineering teams to build consistently and independently.
• Balance short-term product needs with long-term technical sustainability, making clear trade-offs around scalability, reliability, complexity, and speed of delivery.
• Raise the engineering bar across the organisation through technical reviews, design discussions, documentation, and hands-on contributions to critical systems.
• Lead through influence rather than hierarchy, working closely with Backend, Data, Product, DevOps, and Engineering leadership to align teams around technical decisions and priorities.
• Mentor and develop engineers across teams, helping senior engineers grow their technical leadership and fostering a culture of ownership, pragmatism, and continuous learning.
• Improve the reliability and observability of our systems, identifying systemic issues and driving meaningful improvements to the way we build and operate software.
• Contribute to the evolution of our engineering stack and practices, helping shape how we use technologies such as Python, Django, PostgreSQL, AWS, messaging systems, and modern data and infrastructure tooling.
• Stay hands-on, writing and reviewing production-quality code and getting involved in the most technically challenging parts of the systems you help design.
• Help bsport become AI-native, understanding both the opportunities and risks of AI-assisted engineering workflows and actively exploring how they can change what our teams are able to build.

You would be great fit if you have:

• You have extensive backend engineering experience, particularly with Python. Django experience is a plus.
• You have a strong track record of designing and evolving distributed systems at scale, serving millions of users or handling similarly complex workloads.
• You are comfortable challenging technical decisions across the entire stack, from data modelling and service boundaries to APIs, networking, and infrastructure.
• You have demonstrated experience leading technical initiatives that span multiple teams without relying on formal authority.
• You think beyond individual services and understand how architecture, domain boundaries, data ownership, and interfaces affect an entire organisation.
• You are comfortable making pragmatic trade-offs and understand that domain-driven design and interface purity are tools, not goals in themselves.
• You naturally take ownership of ambiguous problems and are willing to contribute to product and design decisions, not just technical implementation.
• You enjoy mentoring engineers and helping raise the technical bar beyond your immediate team.
• You are professionally proficient in English.
• You want to have a company-wide technical impact and influence how engineering at bsport evolves as we scale.
• You understand both how powerful and how dangerous AI-assisted workflows can be, and are excited about redefining the boundaries of what engineering teams can accomplish with them.
