bsport invites a Staff Backend Software Engineer to shape the Core data platform and engineering foundations. You will own the core data models, contribute to the AI-native semantic layer, and drive scalable, secure architecture across product teams while maintaining high standards for reliability and performance.

Qualifications

• Extensive backend engineering experience with Python; Django is a plus.
• Experience designing distributed systems at scale serving millions of users.
• Ability to lead multi-team technical initiatives without formal authority.
• Strong English communication and collaboration in cross-functional teams.

About the role

Joining our Core team means playing a crucial role in shaping the foundations of bsport’s engineering platform. The team provides the core data, systems, and capabilities that enable product teams across the organisation to move faster while maintaining a scalable, secure, and coherent architecture.

Your team’s focus areas will include:

• Administrating and providing core data models to different bsport teams, including clients, studios and locations, franchises, and namespaces.

• Developing the building blocks of our AI semantic layer, powering AI-native features across the product.

• Providing and maintaining core capabilities such as Authentication, our Permission system, and tools enabling large franchises to administrate their studios.

• Managing our Buyables offering, including subscription, webshop & retail, VOD, and pass architectures.

As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will have a broad technical scope across these domains. You will help define the architectural direction of Core, identify and solve systemic technical challenges, and ensure the foundations we build can support bsport’s next stage of growth.

What will be your impact

As a Staff Backend Software Engineer, you will:

• Drive technical strategy and architecture across Core, designing scalable services, event-driven architectures, and shared capabilities that serve multiple product teams and millions of users.

• Own complex, cross-team technical problems from initial problem framing through implementation, challenging assumptions and making pragmatic decisions across the full stack — from data models and APIs to networking and infrastructure.

• Set architectural direction and establish patterns, standards, and best practices that allow multiple engineering teams to build consistently and independently.

• Balance short-term product needs with long-term technical sustainability, making clear trade-offs around scalability, reliability, complexity, and speed of delivery.

• Raise the engineering bar across the organisation through technical reviews, design discussions, documentation, and hands‑on contributions to critical systems.

• Lead through influence rather than hierarchy, working closely with Backend, Data, Product, DevOps, and Engineering leadership to align teams around technical decisions and priorities.

• Mentor and develop engineers across teams, helping senior engineers grow their technical leadership and fostering a culture of ownership, pragmatism, and continuous learning.

• Improve the reliability and observability of our platform, using tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, and Sentry to identify systemic issues and drive meaningful improvements.

• Contribute to the evolution of our engineering stack and practices, participating in our cross-team Backend & DevOps “squad” and helping shape how we use technologies including PostgreSQL, AWS, RabbitMQ, Kafka, Django, and Django Rest Framework.

• Stay hands‑on, writing and reviewing production‑quality code and getting involved in the most technically challenging parts of the systems you help design.

• Help bsport become AI-native, understanding both the opportunities and risks of AI‑assisted engineering workflows and actively exploring how they can change what our teams are able to build.

You would be a great fit if

• You have extensive backend engineering experience, particularly with Python. Django experience is a plus.

• You have a strong track record of designing and evolving distributed systems at scale, serving millions of users or handling similarly complex workloads.

• You are comfortable challenging technical decisions across the entire stack, from data modelling and service boundaries to APIs, networking, and infrastructure.

• You have demonstrated experience leading technical initiatives that span multiple teams, without relying on formal authority.

• You think beyond individual services and understand how architecture, domain boundaries, data ownership, and interfaces affect an entire organisation.

• You are comfortable making pragmatic trade-offs and understand that domain-driven design and interface purity are tools, not goals in themselves.

• You naturally take ownership of ambiguous problems and are willing to contribute to product and design decisions, not just technical implementation.

• You enjoy mentoring engineers and helping raise the technical bar beyond your immediate team.

• You are professionally proficient in English.

• You want to have a company-wide technical impact and influence how engineering at bsport evolves as we scale.

• You understand both how powerful and how dangerous AI‑assisted workflows can be, and are excited about redefining the boundaries of what engineering teams can accomplish with them.
