The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

As part of a group of 15 engineers, you will participate in a project focusing on the implementation of FAIR data management practices of datasets for the ESRF and related data repositories. In the context of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) the adoption of Open Science practices is increasing. Data from Photon and Neutron (PaN) facilities is becoming available for a wider range of users. You will work in close collaboration with software engineers working on data management, databases, data processing, metadata collection and web portals. You will interact with scientists and users to address their needs in data management. You will interact with the EOSC community of users.

Your missions will be the following:

  • Help make ESRF data easier to find and use by developing web tools and working with Oracle and Mongo databases;
  • Adapt AI/LLM tools for the analysis of electronic logbooks produced during beamline operations;
  • Extend the definitions of experimental techniques to classify existing datasets with them;
  • Deploy generic web services in the PaN European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) node;
  • Raise visibility of ESRF data by linking them to trusted networks and external data repositories;
  • Extend the use of DOIs for datasets to samples and other digital objects;
  • Higher university degree (Master or equivalent diploma offering 300 ECTS) in Computer Science, Engineering, Science or equivalent;
  • 2 years minimum of professional related experience;
  • Good to high knowledge of data modeling, metadata and data formats;
  • Good to high knowledge of Python;
  • Experience in developing web applications;
  • Understanding and experience with AI/ML techniques is a plus;
  • Familiarity working on a Linux environment;
  • Good communication skills and team spirit;
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF).

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
