Are you excited about working in a hands-on deep tech start-up team that aims to make a huge impact? Do you like complex challenges? Then, we might be just the company you are looking for!

We are looking for a driven Senior System/Project Engineer - Nuclear Transportation to join our innovative and international team.
About Thorizon

At Thorizon, we're a passionate and rapidly growing team of 45 in Amsterdam and Lyon, all working together to develop a new nuclear power solution. We design and create frontier technology for Molten Salt Reactors (MSR).

Our purpose is to accelerate the availability of clean energy and help solve the climate crisis.

We are in the development phase and aim to solidify our design through analyses, experiments, prototyping, and partnerships. At Thorizon, we believe a strongly coupled multidisciplinary technology development requires a culture of full openness and transparency. That's why we foster values like unity, communication, and support to ensure we grow together as a team while achieving our purpose.
Your mission

You will play a key role in delivering the capability to transport a Cartridge containing fresh, and later used, nuclear fuel salts. You'll work closely with external stakeholders to develop a transport strategy and to design and license nuclear transport cask(s). In addition to this, you'll identify facility functions, systems and requirements needed to perform related activities such as cask handling and storage.

In your role, you will ensure the validity of technical solutions, the delivery of robust design and safety justification, and you'll input to relevant chapters of the Safety Assessment Report licensing process. Being able to manage parallel workloads is a must, as is the confidence and ability to think outside of the box.

Transportation of molten salts products is relatively new to the industry and so you have a fantastic opportunity to pioneer solutions and influence their success from an early stage. You will be given significant responsibility for the delivery of these systems and you'll manage this delivery by interfacing well with internal and external stakeholders. You will play a crucial role in establishing the company's success.

This role is based in Lyon, France.

In this role you will:

  • Develop and manage design requirements
  • Functional interface development and management
  • Drive the system design of nuclear fuel (Cartridge) transport casks
  • Create a roadmap for the cask design and licensing process
  • Manage key interfaces
  • Identify and communicate technical and business risks
  • Manage stakeholders (internal and external)
  • Co-ordinate engineering activities for your system(s).
  • Generate design documentation
  • Control design changes and subsequent scope creep.
  • Liaise effectively with sub-contractors, partners and colleagues to ensure the timely delivery of work.
  • Challenge the team when you foresee potential issues and motivate them to be proactive and constructive to find solutions, and proactively reach out for help

About you:
  • You have a degree in an engineering discipline or be able to demonstrate a similar level of competence.
  • You have strong engineering principles.
  • You have at least 5 years of experience in nuclear transport systems
  • You're accustomed to the relevant regulations related to nuclear transport
  • Experience with System's engineering approaches are a plus
  • Previous knowledge in the nuclear sector is advantageous although demonstratable experience in similar highly regulated, high safety sectors will be considered.
  • You have strong organizational and multitasking abilities, with drive for quality and accuracy.
  • You get inspired by an organization with a large variety of people, with different experiences and background, and have the ability to adjust your management style depending on situation and the people involved.
  • You are open and communicative, sharing your observations and expectations. Clear is kind.
  • You are an excellent communicator in English (working daily language), both spoken and written
  • You are a team player, and as such can build a team of teamplayers
  • You solve problems creatively and know when and how to involve other team members
  • You like working in an agile manner and are comfortable with the fast-moving pace of a technological scale-up
  • You are a hands-on self-starter who likes to work in a multicultural and dynamic environment that is growing fast
  • You have an intrinsic motivation to make an impact and want to contribute to a responsible energy supply
What can you expect from us?
  • Dynamic and ambitious team of nuclear technology professionals that are committed to solving today's energy challenges
  • Unique experience in a fast-growing VC-backed deep tech start-up
  • Opportunity to work on a game-changing technology that reduces our carbon footprint and nuclear waste streams
  • Competitive salary and an employee profit-sharing plan
  • International work experience
  • Office in the heart of Amsterdam or Lyon next to the Central station, including start-up vibes, office amenities, Thursday drinks and quarterly company team events.
