The Role

As the Senior Optics Design Engineer you will lead efforts to design, optimize, and develop laser optics and thin film coatings for extreme-power laser applications, tailored to customer-specific requirements. This role combines technical expertise with customer-facing interactions, providing critical support to the sales department and customers by designing technically feasible, cost-effective, and high-performance laser optics.

In this role, you will:

• Design and develop highly customized and application-optimized laser optics and quality thin film coatings.
• Drive complex project inquiries, developing detailed project plans, budgets and timelines, and coordinating cross-departmental collaboration to effectively manage strategic company projects.
• Provide technical guidance to the customers, addressing project queries and demonstrating technical leadership during the early stages of sales opportunities.
• Collaborate closely with the Sales, R&D and Production departments to align optics and coating designs with customer requirements, manufacturing capabilities, and overall operational efficiency.
• Evaluate risks and propose mitigation strategies for complex or novel coating designs.

Qualifications

• >5 years of hands-on experience in optical thin-film coating design and optimization, with a strong background in product development and practical production experience.
• >3 years of hands-on experience in sputtering technologies (IBS (preferred), MS).
• Understanding of optics applications in laser, semiconductors, medical, defense, and other related industries.
• Excellent skills in dielectric optical coating design with in-depth knowledge of design algorithms (needle optimization, random optimization, robust synthesis, etc.). Proven understanding of coating process errors and its simulation and assessment (random vs systematic errors, coating process simulations, etc.).
• Excellent knowledge of advantages and limitations of different physical vapor deposition (PVD) technologies (thermal evaporation, E-beam, IBS, MS).
• Excellent knowledge of both mechanical (dimensions, bevels, lens centration, etc.) and optical specifications (spectral characteristics, surface quality, surface form, GDD, LIDT, etc.) of optical components as well as metrology standards and techniques used to verify them.
• Excellent project management skills.
