Purpose of the role

What you will do

1. Maintain and refactor existing code to provide a stable API for our VPN client applications and infrastructure.
2. Collaborate with product owners, designers, QA, and other engineers to take initiatives from ideation to completion.
3. Break down large initiatives into smaller milestones to gather stakeholder feedback quickly, allowing us to course-correct immediately.
4. Propose the best next steps when initiatives are deadlocked between product and engineering.
5. Keep security top-of-mind during design and implementation to ensure we keep our promise of protecting our users' data.
6. Demonstrate a growth mindset and team-player attitude by helping the team raise the bar on code quality, architecture, and day-to-day operations.

Job Requirements

1. Strong experience with backend architecture and development.
2. Experience working on highly scalable production systems.
3. Demonstrated problem-solving and software engineering skills.
4. Takes care to ensure that the product always meets user expectations.
5. Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, such as SOLID, Design Patterns, TDD, CI/CD.
6. Is eager to both learn and share their knowledge by engaging in respectful and constructive conversation.

Bonus points for:

1. Familiarity with modern PHP and the Symfony framework.
2. Open source contributions.
3. Experience leading complex, highly scalable production systems.
4. Experience with data processing and storage (e.g., MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, Kafka, Elastic).
5. High-level understanding of cryptography concepts such as key exchange and the difference between symmetric and asymmetric encryption.
