A secondary school teacher provides instruction at the junior or senior high school level in a specific content area. The teacher uses various teaching methods including lecture and demonstration audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations with the ultimate objective of preparing students for advanced education and/or the job market. Certification in the academic subject area is required. This is a ten-month position. Teachers are represented by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepares course objectives and outlines for course of study following the curriculum guidelines and requirements of the territory and school;
- Prepares materials and classroom for class activities;
- Assigns lessons and corrects homework;
- Administers tests to evaluate pupil progress, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of progress;
- Keeps attendance records and maintains accurate and complete student records as required by law, district policies, and administrative regulation;
- Maintains discipline in classroom and enforces all administration policies and rules governing students;
- Meets with parents/guardians to discuss their children's progress and to determine priorities and resource needs for their children;
- Confers with parents/guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems;
- Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops;
- Performs related duties such as sponsoring activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting courses of study, and counseling students in adjustment and academic problems;
- Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicates those objectives to students;
- Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests;
- Observes and evaluates students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health;
- Plans and conducts activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students opportunities to observe, question, and investigate;
- Prepares students for later grades by encouraging exploration and perseverance with challenging tasks;
- Guides and counsels students with adjustment and/or academic problems or special interests;
- Instructs and monitors students in the use and care of equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage;
- Prepares for classes and shows evidence of preparation upon request of supervisors;
- Uses computers, audiovisual aids, and other materials to supplement presentations;
- Prepares objectives and outlines for courses following curriculum guidelines or requirements of states and schools;
- Meets with other professionals to discuss individual students' needs and progress;
- Prepares and implements remedial programs for students requiring extra help;
- Attends professional meetings, conferences, and workshops to maintain and improve professional competence;
- Collaborates with teachers and administrators in developing, evaluating, and revising secondary school programs;
- Prepares reports on students and activities as required by administration;
- Selects, orders, issues, and inventories classroom equipment, materials, and supplies;
- Plans and supervises class projects, field trips, guest visits, and other experiential activities;
- Administers standardized tests and interprets results to identify student strengths and needs;
- Sponsors extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and contests;
- Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as required;
- Performs administrative duties such as assisting in school libraries, monitoring halls and cafeteria, and bus loading/unloading;
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be certified with the Virgin Islands Board of Education. Ensure certification to teach in the U.S. Virgin Islands before applying. For certification details, visit the designated website.
- Degree inclusive of thirty (30) semester credits in Education and at least 30 semester credits in a core academic area; or
- Master's degree from an accredited institution with major work in the core academic area and thirty (30) semester credits in Education; and
- Possession of a valid Virgin Islands Board of Education certification in the core content area.
