About the Position

Since 2022, WorldFish has been organized into two Science Units: Aquatic Food Biosciences and Aquatic Food Systems, each comprising four research teams focused on key thematic and disciplinary pathways to improve aquatic food systems for sustainable development. These eight teams align to impact three domains: climate and environmental sustainability, gender and social inclusion, and nutrition and public health. This matrix structure promotes collaboration while maintaining a focus on research outcomes and impacts. The role involves providing intellectual leadership and coordination within the research theme of inclusive markets development.

Aquatic foods serve diverse markets, from local to global, including luxury seafood and vital nutrition for vulnerable populations. Tens of millions of people, primarily women, work in fish marketing across various stages from landing and processing to retail and consumption. WorldFish’s inclusive markets research team, and partners, aim to identify, characterize, innovate, and scale sustainable, equitable, and efficient market systems. The successful candidate will lead and coordinate research projects in this area, which is a growing focus for us.

Markets are socially embedded, and our work seeks to ensure aquatic foods markets remain central and responsive to community and societal aspirations and cultures. Our research supports supply chains that include women, youth, and small-scale traders, promoting fairness, entrepreneurship, and overcoming barriers to livelihood enhancement. We focus on waste reduction, market information access, fair wages, and sustainable processing and marketing innovations. Additionally, we aim to improve access to finance for small-scale businesses while safeguarding consumers’ rights to safe, nutritious food, especially in export growth contexts.

Our emphasis on inclusion and fairness aims to ensure that market growth benefits lower-income and small-scale actors, supporting their participation in trade from local to global markets. Ultimately, our goal is to direct nutrient-rich, culturally preferred foods efficiently to those in need for healthy diets.

Current research and scaling initiatives include:

  • Engagement of women, youth, and Indigenous Peoples in nutrient-rich, climate-adaptive aquatic foods in East Africa, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Solomon Islands.
  • Training and financing to improve distribution and livelihoods, especially for women, and nutrition in infants and mothers across Egypt, India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Zambia, and Malawi.
  • Enhancement of fish processing for safety, waste reduction, and safety in Solomon Islands, Timor Leste, Myanmar, and Bangladesh.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for the Inclusive Markets research team, including identifying research needs, organizing discussions, fostering research excellence, mentoring colleagues, and synthesizing work on supply chains and market trends.
  • Conduct research, capacity building, and policy influence activities within aquatic food markets and supply chains in collaboration with partners and stakeholders in WorldFish focal countries, aligned with our 2030 strategy.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with public and private sector actors to promote equity and sustainability in aquatic food markets.

Requirements

  • A PhD in food systems, aquatic food systems, supply/value chains, natural resource/environmental management, fisheries, aquaculture, or related fields (preferred).
  • Strong publication record and thought leadership in aquatic food governance, markets, equity, and social inclusion.
  • Effective collaboration skills across disciplines, cultures, and sectors.
  • Excellent coordination, project management, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent English communication skills; additional languages are a plus.
  • High cultural competency and interpersonal skills; international experience preferred.
  • Network of partners in aquatic food systems research and development in the Global South.
  • Skills in economic analysis (micro/macro).
  • Proven success in attracting research funding.

This is an Internationally Recruited Staff (IRS) position with a salary range of USD 78,000 - USD 100,000 for Senior Scientist and USD 64,000 – USD 77,000 for Scientist. Benefits include health, life, accident, and disability insurance, relocation assistance, housing allowance, home-leave tickets, and education support for dependents. The initial contract is three years, with possible extension based on performance and funding.
