Description du poste

Scientific Coordinator of the Science Hub for Li-ion batteries

5 year-contract

Context

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for scientific research using neutrons. Every year, we host over 2000 visits by scientists, who come to the Institute to carry out world-class research.

As part of its long-term vision, the ILL Science Strategy builds on the improvements made to the instrument suite through the Endurance programme to further strengthen our scientific programme, expand our user community, and address major societal challenges. This strategy provides a roadmap for scientific development over the next decade, guiding resource allocation, reinforcing ILL's role in European science and innovation, and supporting political decisions on the future European neutron landscape.

A key component of this strategy is the creation of Science Hubs, designed to consolidate existing strengths while fostering new areas of research with societal impact. These hubs will serve as centres of scientific expertise, supporting the user community, enhancing internal collaboration, and strengthening industry connections. The first Science Hub, dedicated to Li-ion battery research, will play a pivotal role in advancing this field through neutron-based investigations, facilitating high-quality scientific output, and expanding engagement with both academic and industrial partners.

Responsibilities

  1. Propose and manage a five-year research programme addressing scientific and societal challenges using neutron experimental capabilities.
  2. Submit a five-page proposal outlining the research programme, including objectives, milestones, key performance indicators, a timeline, and a resourcing plan.
  3. Oversee the implementation of an electrochemistry support infrastructure at the ILL.
  4. Coordinate and lead a team of ILL scientists and external users to achieve the programme's objectives.
  5. Report directly to the Director of Science.
  6. Ensure the programme's scientific excellence through a competitive, peer-reviewed proposal process.
  7. Develop collaborations on the EPN campus, particularly with the ESRF.

Your profile

  1. High-level scientific expertise in battery research.
  2. Strong knowledge and experience in neutron experimental methods, especially neutron scattering and imaging.
  3. A clear vision of how neutron methods can contribute to battery research.
  4. Significant experience in managing scientific programmes and projects.
  5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for scientific coordination.

Applicants must complete and submit the project template available via the following link as part of their online application: Project Template.
