Organizational context: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. Its International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a data-driven initiative focused on reducing methane emissions, a key contributor to climate change. IMEO provides essential data to meet Paris Agreement goals, leveraging advanced technology and global partnerships.

Job purpose: The Science Communications Specialist will enhance the visibility and impact of IMEO's methane science studies, satellite-based alert system, and data products. This role involves developing and executing strategic communications plans, crafting compelling content, and supporting key events and stakeholder engagements. The purpose is to translate complex scientific information into accessible messaging for diverse audiences, driving awareness and action towards achieving global climate goals through rapid methane mitigation efforts.

Responsibilities:

Develop and implement strategic communications plans for IMEO's workstreams, including the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), scientific research, and data products. Create messaging and speaking points for proactive communications, media interviews, and outreach efforts. Coordinate communications for IMEO events and engagements, producing necessary materials like agendas, briefs, and promotional content. Engage with scientific grantees and partners to ensure comprehensive communication across project lifecycles. Develop and execute an IMEO content strategy, creating and editing various content formats (blogs, press releases, scripts, reports). Support multimedia content development and manage updates for relevant digital properties.

Education:

A first-level university degree (e.g., Bachelor's) in Communications, Journalism, Social Sciences, Humanities, or a related field is required. Fluency in English is essential, as it is the working language of UNEP's IMEO. Knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset.

Work experience:

A minimum of 6 years of experience in communications, content strategy, and/or journalism is required, preferably in the climate/energy sector or science communications. Experience in translating complex topics into clear messaging, delivering impactful content under deadlines, and collaborating with subject matter experts is essential. Familiarity with analytics and KPI tracking is advantageous.
