Job summary

Mistral is seeking a Research Software Engineer for the Sandboxes team to design, build, and operate a platform that runs untrusted code at massive scale across Kubernetes clusters. This role blends distributed systems with low-level virtualization, focusing on reliable systems code in Rust and Python.

You’ll collaborate with researchers and ML engineers to turn their needs into platform features, joining a small, senior team that values quality and ownership.

Qualifications

• Strong background in software engineering and distributed systems.
• Experience building and operating large-scale infrastructure.
• Fluency in Python or Rust; writing high-performance systems code.
• Experience with Kubernetes and cluster operations or related areas.
• Self-starter with ability to learn quickly and work with ambiguity.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the sandboxing platform across Kubernetes clusters.
• Develop sandbox runtime using Firecracker for fast startup and snapshotting.
• Optimize performance and latency to support millions of concurrent sandboxes.
• Write robust, tested Rust and Python code; participate in code reviews and CI/CD.
• Own cross-cluster networking, security boundaries, and monitoring.
