CEA Grenoble seeks a Master’s student for an internship on reproducible elemental quantification in technological materials using hard X-ray photoemission (HAXPES). The project focuses on achieving quantification within 5% uncertainty by combining intensity calibration and core-line analysis, in collaboration with an academic lab and a standards institute.
You will work with a dedicated spectrometer and quantification software, refining data analysis and energy loss models while contributing to
Reproducible elemental quantification of technological materials by photoemission H/F

Internship
The development of advanced electronic components requires a thorough understanding of the elemental composition of the constituent thin-film materials at the micro- and nanometer scale. This internship focuses on the physical aspects of X-ray photoemission to gain better understanding about reproducible quantification with uncertainties of 5% and below.

Among the analytical techniques available in cleanrooms and laboratories, hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) is gaining ground due to its ability to perform non-destructive measurements below the surface and deeper at the sub-surface to adress buried layers. This internship addresses the major challenge, within the international community in the field, of high-precision quantification in HAXPES, based on recent methodologies using both intensity calibration with a spectrometer transmission function and core-line intensity determination using Tougaard background substraction. The internship will focus on refining the intensity determination by incorporating physical data describing the energy losses of photoelectrons in the materials under investigation.

Master 2 Materials Science, Condensed Matter Physics or equivalent. An interest in carrying out physical measurements on ultra-high-vacuum systems (either commercial or home-made ones), analysing spectroscopic data using dedicated software, and working as part of a team within a multi-partner collaboration involving an academic laboratory (the Paris Institute of Nanosciences) and a British standards institute (the National Physical Laboratory).
