General context
The integration of large amounts of renewable energy sources (RES) such as offshore wind and photovoltaic (PV), along with energy market integration, drives the future development of the pan-European power grid. Reinforcing the transmission grid to transport large power over long distances from generation to load centers is essential. Extended HVDC grids, in Point-to-Point or Multi-Terminal (MTDC) configurations, are considered the best solution. Multi-Terminal grids based on voltage source converter (VSC) technology are crucial for harnessing offshore wind potential in the North Seas. These systems will evolve from simple point-to-point to complex meshed structures. Developing such HVDC systems involves overcoming control and protection challenges and considering AC grid interactions. The increasing integration of RES and power electronics devices (PEIDs) will impact system characteristics like inertia and behavior.
Objectives / Missions
The role involves developing control and protection strategies for MTDC (HVDC) grids and analyzing AC/DC grid stability. The candidate will participate in European projects and collaborate on various initiatives, including grid consulting activities. The main topics include:
HVDC/MTDC control and protection
Developing control strategies, stability analysis, and identifying control modes for managing different operating states of MTDC systems. Modeling and control of Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) systems for simulation of complex grids are essential skills.
AC/DC stability analysis
Modeling, stability assessment, and control of HVAC/HVDC transmission systems with high power electronics integration. The candidate will contribute to modeling and analysis, proposing control solutions to enhance system stability, requiring skills in EMT/dynamic phasor modeling, frequency-domain analysis, and state-space methods.
Master’s or PhD degree with experience in power grid modeling, simulation, and control. Focus on HVDC systems or wind farms is advantageous.
Technical skills:
Good command of English, teamwork, organizational skills.
