Principal Engineer - Big Data Platform (BDP), Nice

Job Title: Principal Engineer - Big Data Platform (BDP)

Business Environment:

As a Principal Engineer for the Big Data Platform (BDP), you will integrate the team responsible for building the Big Data Platform in Azure, within the larger Creation Platform. Our mission is to provide solutions for all Amadeus businesses to host their big data, reporting, business intelligence, machine learning, and GenAI applications. We ensure this platform remains secure, with proper daily ingestion, anonymization, and storage of data. We are organized in a SAFe train (around 100 people mainly in Nice, Bangalore, and Bogota), and you will join one of our scrum teams.

The Big Data Platform in figures:

  • More than 12,000 daily Spark jobs
  • Approximately 15PB of data in our data mesh
  • 200 application workspaces delivered and 3 GenAI hackathons organized in 2024

Main Responsibilities:

Scaling this large platform is only possible through automation from day one, using Infrastructure as Code (Bicep and Terraform) and embracing DevOps best practices.

Common accountabilities:

  • Proficient in technical knowledge to ensure team performance; recognized as a leader in your area, with potential to train specialists and senior specialists.
  • Understand how main business drivers impact your area; assess complex problems with broad impact, improve processes, and communicate complex information effectively.
  • Work with high autonomy, lead projects, or contribute to cross-functional projects and technological strategies.

Specific accountabilities:

Technical Excellence:

  • Produce high-quality, efficient code.
  • Engage in all steps of product development, including creating technical requirements, feasibility studies, planning, dependencies, and improvements.
  • Investigate, analyze, and recommend solutions for complex software and system defects.
  • Troubleshoot problems promptly and with high engagement.
  • Design applications for easy monitoring and operation to enhance infrastructure availability.
  • Apply best practices for code quality and security, including code reviews, guidelines, testing, and refactoring.
  • Maintain cross-disciplinary knowledge (UI, network, etc.).

Continuous Improvement:

  • Suggest component evolution and manage technical debt.
  • Enhance project delivery and recommend process improvements.

Building Cross-Functional Teams & Knowledge Sharing:

  • Collaborate effectively with others and ensure smooth communication.
  • Create successful project engagement and drive operational and service excellence.
  • Participate in PE community events.
  • Mentor and coach junior team members, fostering R&D culture and talent development.
  • Act as a developer advocate at hackathons, recruitment events, conferences, and open-source contributions.

About the Ideal Candidate:

  • 10+ years of software development experience.
  • Resilience and patience in building environments.
  • Strong skills in automation for implementation and deployment.
  • Excellent communication, empathy, lateral thinking, and influencing skills.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Knowledge of platform business models is a plus.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies (SAFe is a plus).
