Your role
You will be part of the Marquez Team at EMBL Grenoble and work at the CSCF Chemistry lab in EMBL Heidelberg. You will contribute to the design, synthesis, and optimization of novel bioactive compounds starting from fragment screening hits identified through the high throughput crystallography pipelines at the HTX facility in Grenoble. Your duties will include:
- Design and synthesize new bioactive compounds for various target proteins/receptors in medicinal chemistry and agrochemistry.
- Collaborate closely with Computational Chemistry, X-ray Crystallography, in vitro and in vivo screening experts.
- Design, conduct, and optimize multi-step syntheses as required by project needs.
- Monitor reactions and characterize the products using standard analytical methods (TLC, HPLC, HPLC-MS, and NMR).
- Evaluate both chemical and biological results and define routes for compound optimization.
- Maintain accurate documentation of procedures and results according to laboratory guidelines.
- Report results in internal meetings.
- Contribute to conceptual planning and monitoring of project progress.
- Mentor Ph.D. and Masters students working in the lab.
- Contribute to the operation and maintenance of lab infrastructure and equipment.
- Adhere to health and safety requirements.

Qualifications and Skills
We seek a motivated individual with relevant scientific and technical expertise, ready to learn, take ownership, and responsibility. The ideal candidate would have:
- A degree in organic chemistry, chemical biology, or medicinal chemistry. Postdoctoral experience is preferred.
- Profound experience in organic syntheses and analytical techniques.
- Experience in the design and synthesis of biologically active molecules.
- Ability to work productively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
- Excellent presentation skills and effective communication in cross-functional teams.
- Experience with standard software packages, search engines, and scientific databases.
The successful candidate is a motivated self-starter, capable of working within a multidisciplinary team, and willing to travel regularly to Grenoble and within Europe. Strong communication and organizational skills, along with a high standard of written and spoken English, are mandatory.
Additional Preferences
Experience in computational chemistry and modeling is a plus.
