The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) seeks a postdoctoral researcher to develop multiscale deformation and recrystallisation models under the ERC Starting Grant project D-REX. You will apply CPFEM and PF modelling to predict microstructure evolution and validate with 3D experimental data from ESRF facilities, in collaboration with DTU, KU Leuven and Oxford.

You will publish results, present at international conferences, and contribute open-source modelling pipelines.

Qualifications

  • PhD in materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, computational mechanics or a related field obtained within the last 3 years.
  • Strong command of crystal plasticity finite element modelling or phase field modelling of microstructural evolution.
  • Solid background in physical metallurgy: dislocation substructures, texture, recovery, recrystallisation and grain growth.
  • Strong programming skills in Python/MATLAB and experience running simulations on HPC resources.
  • Ability to handle large, heterogeneous datasets and design new analysis pipelines.
  • Familiarity with 3D characterisation techniques welcome but not required; strong theoretical/computational profile also suitable.
  • Proven ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team across several institutes.

Responsabilités

  • Developing and calibrating CPFEM models of deformation microstructures with grain-level validation.
  • Developing PF models of recrystallisation and grain growth parameterised from experimental data.
  • Validating against DFXM, DCT and 3DXRD measurements and establishing reproducible workflows.
  • Publishing results, presenting at conferences, and releasing pipelines as open-source software.
