Offer Description

Presentation of the structure:

The Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace (IPSL; https://www.ipsl.fr ) and its Climate Modelling Centre ( https://cmc.ipsl.fr ) are coordinating the Climaviation project with ONERA, an ambitious research project on the role of aviation in climate change. Climaviation is funded by the Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile (DGAC, French Ministry of Ecological Transition).

One of Climaviation's objectives is to study the impact on the atmosphere and climate of condensation trails and cirrus clouds generated by aircraft. The IPSL's contribution focuses on quantifying their climatic effects. This activity is based on the LMDZ atmospheric model, which now includes a representation of the formation of contrails and their evolution into induced cirrus clouds. It is now necessary to improve certain aspects of the parameterisation, and to study the simulated radiative forcing in more detail. IPSL is therefore looking for a post-doctoral student to carry out this mission. The post-doctoral student will be part of the Climaviation team, which currently numbers around 10 people, and will work with Nicolas Bellouin, Olivier Boucher and Etienne Vignon.

Job details:

Typical occupation or job: Post-doctoral researcher in contrail modelling

Job type: Researcher

Category: A

Mission:

The researcher will improve the parameterisation of contrails in the LMDZ climate model. There are several possible areas for improvement, in particular (1) enabling a distinction to be made between clouds resulting from the evolution of contrails and natural cirrus clouds, (2) proposing a better representation of the microphysics of contrails and induced cirrus clouds, so that the effects of new aircraft or fuels can be taken into account in detail, (3) differentiating the optical properties of contrails, induced cirrus clouds and cirrus clouds on the basis of observations. It will also be important to evaluate the calculations of the radiative forcing exerted by induced contrails and cirrus clouds, for example by comparison with other radiative transfer codes.

Main activities:

  • Design, implement and evaluate several ways of improving the capabilities of the parameterisation of induced contrails and cirrus clouds in the LMDZ climate model.
  • Carry out simulations to calculate the global radiative forcing of aviation-induced contrails and cirrus clouds, and evaluate these calculations by comparison with other radiative transfer codes.
  • Present the results and write the scientific articles associated with these developments and the results obtained.

Project management:Not planned

Supervision: Notplanned
