Description du poste

The Acoustic and Cognitive Spaces team at IRCAM is currently recruiting for a post-doctoral researcher in 3D audio signal processing and room acoustics on an 18-month fixed-term contract.

The selected candidate should ideally start as soon as possible but no later than November 1st, 2023.

INTRODUCTION TO IRCAM :

IRCAM, a non-profit association located at 1, Place Igor Stravinsky, 75004 Paris, is affiliated with the Georges Pompidou National Centre for Art and Culture. Its core objectives encompass research, creation, and educational endeavors focused on 21st-century music and its intersection with science and technology.

As part of the CONTINUUM project, funded by the France 2030 Programme, IRCAM is currently looking for a post-doctoral researcher to join on an 18-month fixed-term contract.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION :

The CONTINUUM project endeavours to develop novel concepts for producing and disseminating audio-augmented live performances, establishing a continuous experience bridging real and virtual soundscapes, connecting artists and audiences, and merging technological innovation with cultural production. With the aim of achieving a new standard of sound immersion, this cutting-edge project focuses on creating a comprehensive production framework that spans from audio recording to playback, enabling the creation and delivery of immersive audio / video content across diverse user platforms and playback configurations (performance venues, public spaces, home entertainment, etc.). The innovative production framework will be implemented in a selection of pioneering artistic and musical projects, contributing to their wider accessibility.

The CONTINUUM project, led by IRCAM, is a collaboration between AMADEUS and OWL Perception (VRtuoz), combining their expertise in acoustics, audio signal processing, immersive audio, binaural audio technologies, and virtual / augmented reality.

The available position is part of the Acoustic and Cognitive Spaces team (EAC) within the STMS Lab of UMR IRCAM, CNRS, Sorbonne University, and the Ministry of Culture. The EAC team at IRCAM specializes in the analysis / synthesis and perception of immersive audio.

JOB DESCRIPTION :

  • Designing and developing active acoustic reverberation systems.
  • Performing numerical simulations to optimize audio signal processing algorithms.
  • Experimentally validating the developed systems in the variable acoustic concert hall at IRCAM.
  • Developing and conducting perceptual experiments in various environments.
  • Participating in the integration of the active reverberation module into real-time spatialization environments Spat~ and Panoramix at IRCAM, and the Holophonix system by Amadeus.
  • Contributing to the writing of scientific articles and technical reports.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS :

  • The candidate must hold a doctoral degree with a strong component in 3D audio.
  • Excellent knowledge of (space-time-frequency) audio signal processing.
  • Very good understanding of room acoustics.
  • Very good experience in the design and modeling of acoustic systems.
  • Strong experience in multi-channel audio practices (HOA, etc.).
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Matlab, Python, and Max.
  • Practical experience with acoustic measurement instruments.
  • Good experience and methodology in critical listening.
  • Excellent skills in scientific communication, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Capacity to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines (deliverables, conferences, demonstrations).

SALARY : According to background and experience.

In addition, you will also benefit from :

  • 32 days of paid leave and 11 days of time off in lieu (based on full-time employment for a complete year)
  • Meal vouchers with a value of 10 euros per working day
  • 50% coverage of your public transport subscription in the Île-de-France region
  • A comprehensive and advantageous collective health and welfare plan
  • Social, cultural, and sports benefits (Personnel Association offering numerous outings and recreational activities at attractive rates)
  • Upon completion of the probationary period, a Culture Card providing free admission or discounted rates for cultural establishments affiliated with the ministry, as well as priority access (for the cardholder and one accompanying person)

APPLICATION DEADLINE : July 30th, 2023
