- Conduct research into the history of knowledge and anthropology in colonial and post-colonial situations, on the constitution and circulation of archives and documentary resources, as part of the ANR ArchIFAN project “Revisiting the history of science in colonial situations. Actors and archives of the Institut français d'Afrique noire (IFAN)”.
- Contribute to the promotion of the ArchIFAN project.
- Conduct anthropological and historical research to identify and locate dispersed bodies of archives and documentary resources in France and West Africa, study their production and circulation, and examine their current legacies.
- Prepare and submit at least two research articles to peer-reviewed journals.
- Present work at at least three scientific events.
- Coordinate the feeding of a database.
- Participate in the ArchIFAN project's promotional activities.
- Participate in the organization of an international conference.
The successful candidate will have a fully-equipped workstation at IMAF (UMR 8171 - CNRS/IRD/EHESS/EPHE/Paris 1/AMU), 5 cours des Humanités, 93300 Aubervilliers), one of France's leading laboratories for areal studies of Africa.
He or she will join a community of around a hundred established researchers and teacher-researchers, young researchers and doctoral students in this field. The contract is part of the ANR ArchIFAN project, led by IMAF, LADEC (Université Lumière Lyon 2) and CESSMA (Université de Paris, IRD, INALCO) in collaboration with IFAN-CAD (Dakar, Senegal). The post-doc will be supervised by the project's scientific managers.
The candidate must have defended a doctoral thesis in the humanities and social sciences.
The position requires knowledge of the history of science in colonial and post-colonial context. It requires an interest in material culture and heritage issues, and research experience in Africa. The position also requires skills in digital humanities, as well as good writing skills in French and English.
