JOB ENVIRONMENT:
Institut Mines-Télécom is the leading public group of engineering and management Grandes Écoles in France. It comprises eight public graduate Grandes Écoles and two subsidiary graduate schools, fostering a rich ecosystem of partner schools, economic, academic, and institutional partners, key players in education, research, and economic development.
Mines Saint-Étienne, a graduate school of the Institut Mines-Télécom, focuses on education, research, innovation, industrial transfer, and scientific culture dissemination. With 2,500 students, 500 staff, and a budget of €50m, it has 3 campuses dedicated to the industry of the future, health and well-being, and digital sovereignty and microelectronics. It is ranked in the top 15 graduate engineering schools in France and in the top 500 universities worldwide.
The 2023-2027 strategy of Mines Saint-Étienne aligns with that of Institut Mines-Télécom. It aims to:
To support this strategy, it is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The CIS brings together 70 people, including 18 professors in engineering, industrial computing, biomechanics, and healthcare engineering. Since its creation in 2004, CIS has demonstrated leadership in innovative themes such as soft tissue biomechanics. SAINBIOSE (INSERM UMR 1059) collaborates with CIS researchers, the faculty of Medicine at Jean Monnet University, Saint-Etienne University Hospital, Inserm, and the French Blood Establishment. Its scientific goal is to better understand biostress in osteoarticular and cardiovascular pathologies.
Biomechanics, both experimental and computational, is a key research area for SAINBIOSE, covering tissue modeling to clinical and industrial applications, notably with the textile industry. In 2024, Prof Stéphane Avril received an ERC Advanced grant for the JuvenTwin project, which aims to create multiscale digital twins of vascular aging and rejuvenation treatments. The research group has 15 years of experience in biomechanics and mechanobiology.
We are opening a non-permanent postdoctoral position to join Prof Avril’s team working on the JuvenTwin project. The work will be based at Mines Saint-Étienne within the SAINBIOSE research unit (Inserm U1059), located at the Centre Ingénierie et Santé, Saint-Étienne. The main objective is to develop an innovative multi-scale digital twin model, combining finite-element methods and physics-informed neural networks to simulate arterial microstructures reconstructed from patient-specific data, including embedded prestressed cells. The model will incorporate temporal variations in cell prestress informed by patient data and cell signaling network models. A 3-month research stay at TU Graz (Gerhard Holzapfel’s lab) is planned.
Tasks may evolve based on departmental and institutional needs.
