The PhD project will be carried out in the project-team MICROCOSME at the Centre Inria de l’Université de Grenoble Alpes and the Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire de Physique (LIPhy, CNRS/UGA) under the joint supervision of Hidde de Jong. The project MUlti-SIze Hybrid Cell Models (MuSiHC) aims at developing hybrid approaches to modeling cells and bioreactors for producing high-value compounds. It will develop a toolkit of hybrid models of different sizes, combining mechanistic descriptions with AI/ML components, to enable reliable cell and bioreactor simulations. The project will focus on Escherichia coli as a platform for bioproduction of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), a high-value chemical with many industrial applications.
The PhD involves developing small-scale, dynamic models to optimize 1,3-PDO production by E. coli. Tasks include model formulation and reduction, conducting mini-bioreactor experiments for calibration, using models to identify optimal conditions, and experimentally testing these conditions. The candidate will collaborate with partners at INRAE and Toulouse Biotechnology Institute. The project also aims to derive general principles for developing and validating small-scale biotechnological models.
