Ph D thesis proposal (starting Oct 2025)
Sustainable metal extraction using integrated CO2 capture and catalyzed mineralization
GENERAL OBJECTIVES: This research project supported by the National Research and Technology Agency (ANRT) and Mecaware aims to develop sustainable metal recycling technologies integrating molecular recognition and mineral carbonation for the Lithium-ion battery sector.
CONTEXT AND SUMMARY: In response to the climate emergency, this project focuses on CO2 capture, utilization, and storage, alongside sustainable metal extraction and supply. Led by Prof. J. Leclaire's group, the project involves developing supramolecular technology to valorize CO2 capture products for separating metals from lithium-ion batteries through complex solution chemistry, mechanistic investigations, and process optimization. The project aims to advance the process to higher TRLs, including scale-up, techno-economic, and life cycle analyses.
THE LAB: The research will be conducted at the Chemistry Laboratory of the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, with collaborative stays for simulation and scale-up at Toulouse and MIT (USA).
Keywords: Molecular and supramolecular chemistry, Green chemistry, Organic chemistry, Catalysis, CO2 capture and utilization, Self-assembling, Coordination chemistry, Geochemical modelling, Electrochemistry, Physical chemistry.
Candidate requirements: Master’s degree in molecular chemistry, graduation from an engineering school, solid background in coordination, supramolecular, physical chemistry, thermodynamics, spectroscopy, scientific curiosity, methodology, teamwork skills.
Application materials: CV, 2 recommendation letters, academic transcript with grades for master’s or equivalent.
