ABOUT THE JOB

Interfacing with our numerous internal clients, the Patent Engineer provides Intellectual Property support on the business processes of the company and its affiliates. Within the Legal Department (IP team), the Patent Engineer will collaborate with R&D engineers and business operatives, studying IP-related requests and providing initial counsel on technical elements of new developments’ exploitation, validity, IP matters, and protection strategy.

This position reports to the Patent Manager, based in Grenoble.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Advise and assist internal clients in matters of new developments and their exploitation:
   • Conduct regular and transverse prior art studies and analysis during or after product conception,
   • Study and analyze competitors’ patents and patent portfolios,
   • Participate actively in IP studies of R&D projects and report on follow-up to the IP Manager,
   • Assist R&D teams with advice to bypass foreign IP rights,
   • Evaluate and analyze technical documents (drawings, etc.),
   • Conduct IP trainings regularly and provide additional sessions as needed.
2. Advise clients on patentability and invention matters:
   • Initial evaluation of inventions,
   • Invention analysis and initial technical assessment for patentability,
   • Support inventors to improve invention disclosures with illustrations, descriptions, and concept development,
   • Participate in brainstorming sessions, give feedback, and support patent application processes,
   • Communicate IP strategic matters with local teams, including filing, extension, or maintenance decisions.
3. Support internal projects and IP strategy:
   • Increase awareness of IP strategic questions among R&D teams,
   • Monitor competitors’ patents and active IP rights,
   • Coordinate patent filings, liaise with external patent firms,
   • Evaluate counterfeits and infringements for potential litigation, involving the IP Manager,
   • Prepare submissions, oppositions, and invalidity actions, coordinate external searches, and define strategies,
   • Provide infringement risk analysis,
   • Support legal and sales teams during contract negotiations, involving the IP Manager,
   • Determine countries for patent nationalization and validation,
   • Manage the IP portfolio, including patent family decisions and fee payments,
   • Advise on inventor remuneration systems and legal constraints,
   • Counsel IP referents and educate new team members according to internal procedures.
4. Day-to-day tasks:
   • Maintain and analyze internal and external IP databases,
   • Participate in IP network exchanges, committees, and activities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Engineering degree or Bachelor of Science with a technical background, preferably in engineering,
• Previous patent analysis or searching experience preferred.

SKILLS

• Excellent analytical and communication skills,
• Self-motivated and proactive,
• Experience with databases and search tools like Orbit, DIAM’S, EPO, USPTO, SIPO, etc.,
• Strong patent research and IP procedure knowledge,
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
• Positive attitude, open-minded, and comfortable in international environments.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

• Fluent English required; French highly appreciated,
• Regional mother tongue other than English or French highly appreciated.
