GENERAL PURPOSE

The Nursing Supervisor position plans, assigns, and reviews the work of lower-level professional and technical nursing and patient care staff across multiple units during an assigned shift. Work includes performing administrative functions and coordinating all care provided to patients on the assigned units.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Nursing and/or Director of Nursing.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position exercises supervision over the following job classifications: Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Unit Clerk, and Certified Nurse Aide.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE POSITION
  • Assign nursing staff to floor units and determine the need for additional personnel due to staff vacancies or absences.
  • Secure additional staff by scheduling relief personnel or contracted pool agencies.
  • Consult with unit nurses regarding patients' medical and social status and address problems encountered in providing patient care, making reassignments as needed based on staffing, emergencies, or census changes, following established seniority rules.
  • Make rounds with medical staff, check and carry out physician's orders, and prepare relevant records.
  • Discuss patient progress with physicians and relatives, monitor the quality of care, and review patient care plans for adequacy and necessary changes.
  • Observe patient status and staff needs during rounds, identify problems or maintenance needs, and assist staff in providing direct patient care services such as medication passing, admissions, and treatments.
  • Maintain liaison with supervisory staff and personnel in other departments, coordinate care with related fields, and review and discuss patient records with staff.
  • Complete required reports, coordinate non-nursing services, evaluate staff performance, and handle employee complaints and disciplinary actions.
  • Demonstrate operational practices to new staff, answer questions, and provide guidance to improve care delivery.
  • Supervise staff to ensure survey compliance, assist in quality assurance, maintain incident reports, and participate in emergency drills and investigations.
  • Prepare daily reports for Nursing Administration, communicating significant events and concerns promptly.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED, plus graduation from an accredited nursing school.
  • Four (4) years of practical nursing experience, including two (2) years in a supervisory or charge nurse role.
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of nursing principles, practices, standards, and documentation methods; knowledge of regulatory requirements; supervisory skills; ability to plan, evaluate, and coordinate staff efforts; establish effective relationships; instruct and correct staff; keep records, and prepare reports. Must handle emergent situations calmly, prioritize tasks, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Frequent standing, walking, sitting, talking, and hearing; ability to lift and support patients; occasional use of hands for handling objects; reaching, climbing, and other physical activities as necessary.
