Local Unit & Position Description

Area Benelux & France is part of the Maritime Region West Europe, consisting of a team of approximately 73 employees providing various technical services across disciplines such as:

  • CMC - Certification of Materials and Components for vessels and offshore installations.
  • NB - New Building classification for vessels and offshore installations.

This area collaborates closely with the Regional FiS - Fleet in Service organization. It has five locations: Antwerp, Le Havre, Marseille, Saint-Nazaire, and Rotterdam, with some team members working remotely to serve clients effectively.

Our goal is to lead in innovation, digitalization, and customer-centricity, introducing new regimes like electronic certificates, remote inspections, 3D printing, sensor-based maintenance, and alternative fuels, aiming towards the future of shipping. Customer needs and footprint reduction are central to our approach.

We are seeking an Electrical Surveyor to join our NB team in France, based in the Saint Nazaire area, mainly working at Chantiers de l’Atlantique and other locations along the French west coast.

Main responsibilities:

  • Participate in DNV survey teams for new vessel projects across all phases and disciplines, from planning to project close-out.
  • Apply and interpret international and classification rules related to maritime industry regulations.
  • Address complex engineering problems, including conflicting design integrations in electrical and automation systems.
  • Oversee electrical, automation, and navigation disciplines during the construction of cruise vessels from a classification perspective.
  • Survey materials and components in manufacturer facilities.
  • Approve drawings and documentation related to electrical and automation disciplines.
  • Collaborate closely with the DNV Project Manager at the yard.
  • Engage with clients regarding rules and design aspects.
  • Utilize engineering knowledge for problem-solving.
  • Manage client relationships along with other organizational units.

Work Location & Conditions:

Based in Saint-Nazaire, with local terms and conditions, including a Contrat cadre Syntec, company car, and regional travel.

Qualifications:

  • MSc in electrical engineering or mechatronics, or maritime equivalent with seagoing experience.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience, with advantages for those with surveyor or electrical officer experience in electric propulsion vessels.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation, control engineering, and shipbuilding projects, especially diesel-electric cruise vessels or ferries.
  • Deep understanding of electrical systems, automation, SOLAS, standards, and classification rules.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Personal qualities:

  • Customer-focused problem solver.
  • Excellent communication skills in English; French is beneficial long-term.
  • Physically capable of working in shipyard environments.
  • Team-oriented, flexible, independent, result-driven, organized, eager to learn.
