You will join CREER.
As a Senior Lecturer at the Institut Mines-Télécom, you will be involved in teaching, research and technology transfer.
Teaching activities
Institut Mines-Télécom's teacher-researchers are responsible for drawing up teaching programs, coordinating teaching teams and promoting pedagogical innovation. The person recruited will therefore be expected to participate, according to his/her areas of expertise, in the school's teaching activities, which include :
In terms of teaching, depending on his/her skills, the person recruited will be able to join the team teaching fluid mechanics (80 hrs) or thermodynamics (80 hrs) as part of the first-year “Energy” teaching unit, implemented in the form of a “red thread” project. In addition to these courses, he/she will participate, according to his/her area of expertise, in other fluid mechanics courses, in the EAU elective unit (24h), in hydrogeology courses and tutorials (24h) in the mineral resources department (ISERM), in GIS courses in the ISERM and Environnement Énergie risques (EER) departments (8h), and, possibly, in courses given as part of the Master in Water Sciences at the University of Montpellier. The person recruited will have an appetite for teamwork and new educational methods.

The total amount of student-facing teaching should represent at least 150 hours, with a gradual increase over the first three years.
In terms of supervisory activities, the person recruited will be required to take part, as part of the core curriculum, in research and the supervision of field missions as part of the pedagogical-action approach developed by the school, as well as tutoring students and employees (apprentices).
By way of indication, participation in teaching activities represents an average of around 150 hours per year for a teacher-researcher.
Research activities
Today, the ERT team's activities focus on the study and impact of climate and human activities on the water cycle. In particular, they concern the observation, modeling and forecasting phases, with a view to effective water management. The ERT team's work covers both the observation of extreme phenomena (rainfall, Cévennes floods and low-water levels in mountain rivers) and the modeling of these phenomena using physical, conceptual or statistical models. The latter aspect is particularly developed using machine learning methods, in which the team has recognized experience. These methods are deployed on various study sites and projects, including :
- The Cevennes rivers workshop site, co-directed by HSM-IMT Mines Alès with Mines St Etienne and UMR ESPACE, and OHM-CV supported by the Grenoble IGE Unit,
- The Mont Lozère observatory, co-led by UMR ESPACE and IPGP, with the participation of the University of Illinois.
- SNO Karst and in particular the MEDYCYSS observatory, led by the HYTAKE team,
- The ANR Hydr.IA Labcom with SYNAPSE Informatique on flood forecasting using Artificial Intelligence,
The team also participates in the work of two transversal workshops of the HSM unit:
- The Machine Learning for Hydrology Workshop
- The Interdisciplinary Modeling - Scientific Computing workshop
Hydrological and meteorological phenomena, and the hydrogeological structures that intercept them (watersheds, aquifers), raise important questions: (1) concerning their observation due to the heterogeneity of forcings and the heterogeneity of their structure, (2) concerning the non-stationarity of structures and environments in the face of both local and global changes, and (3) for their modeling and forecasting in order to be able to guide their management in a forward-looking manner. Observation and modelling of the hydrometeorological chain and of extreme weather and climate phenomena are a long-standing theme of the ERT team, which approaches them using statistical methods (neural networks). The societal stakes associated with this research are considerable; they concern drought as much as extreme rainfall and flooding. The research carried out, even if carried out with national and international players, is almost always carried out in conjunction with local stakeholders, sometimes in the form of participatory research, in order to maximize the impact on society.
The person recruited will be keen to become involved in the DREAM (Data-driven Research on Environmental AI Modeling) research project, which addresses these issues, and in the cross-disciplinary workshops mentioned above. Key words to be considered are: changes of scale, uncertainties, non-stationarity, observation methods for distributed and time-varying phenomena, extreme phenomena, flash floods, low-water levels, karsts, climate change, carbon cycle, image processing, geomatics.
These research activities are part of a sustainable development approach that refers to the United Nations' SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), in particular Goal 6 on water scarcity and sustainable water management, and Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production.
With this in mind, IMT Mines Alès is a partner of the ICIREWARD (International Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Water Systems Dynamics). With nearly 400 scientists from 15 research laboratories and 150 PhD students, ICIREWARD, located at the University of Montpellier, is the largest structured and organized community in France in the field of water sciences.
Valorisation and technology transfer activities
Research activities should be the subject of standard academic valorisation, e.g. publications in journals and conferences, and participation in GdRs and ITM communities. You will also be responsible for getting involved in commercialization activities with partner companies. This will include industrial chairs, setting up and participating in research contracts with industry, and drafting applications for funding from public bodies or international programmes.
In addition, you will need to be able to understand the process of commercial exploitation of research results in order to identify opportunities to contribute to cooperation between academic research, industrial research and the innovation sectors.
Finally, in your field of scientific and technical expertise, you will be required to carry out actions designed to support companies or the IMT Mines Alès incubator in order to encourage the creation of spin-offs and the development of technological companies.
The position requires solid teaching and research experience in the “Hybrid Modeling” discipline.
You will need to be dynamic, autonomous, rigorous and have good organizational skills, as well as being curious, creative and able to take the initiative in a collaborative environment.
Diploma required: PhD in one of the fields related to hydrogeology, hydrology, meteorology, environmental modeling or data-driven modeling of natural systems.
