This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate with deep expertise in capital markets and EU listed company regulation to be a member of our highly successful Global Transactions practice and our valued global Knowledge function, working in an international and diverse team, in an inclusive environment, directly contributing to the firm’s client and people strategies.

Role summary/purpose of job

The Knowledge Lawyer will focus on capital markets (debt and/or equity) and EU listed company regulation, working with practitioners across the global practice (and principally within the EU). Freshfields is a market leader for capital markets and corporate work in Europe, ranked Band 1 for equity capital markets and corporate/M&A and Band 2 for debt capital markets in Chambers Europe. Examples of areas within the role’s remit include the Prospectus Regulation, the Market Abuse Regulation, Shareholders’ Rights, Corporate Sustainability Reporting and Due Diligence, and Transparency Directives, EU Green Bond Standard, etc.

The Knowledge Lawyer will deliver EU capital markets and listed company knowhow to lawyers in relevant teams across our Continental European practice (and, where relevant, updating lawyers in other regions) to maximise efficiency and minimise risk in line with business priorities. They will monitor and provide expert insights into EU regulatory developments relevant to European capital markets and companies with a debt and/or equity listing in the EU, understanding their implications for clients and practice, including in the context of M&A, and translating that into client and internal initiatives.

The Knowledge Lawyer will bring deep expertise and a willingness to develop further in this space, with a view to:

  • Enabling the firm to provide market-leading client service: by capturing and sharing insights and knowhow from client matters, supporting on legal/market current awareness with a practical approach to help lawyers understand impacts for clients and their work, developing Knowledge products and tools (including briefing notes, blogs) and driving Knowledge innovation workstreams;
  • Helping grow the firm’s business: by raising the profile of the practice and strengthening client relationships through content development (blogs, alerts, thought leadership), publications, and client education;
  • Developing legal skills of lawyers: through internal training and acting as a legal resource for complex queries, upskilling lawyers in this evolving area of law.

Collaboration is key, and the Knowledge Lawyer will work closely with other Knowledge Lawyers focusing on debt and equity capital markets, liaising with colleagues in M&A, finance, tax, employment law, and local EU offices to ensure cohesive and relevant knowledge sharing.

The role involves integrating into the wider Knowledge community, fostering a culture of high performance, inclusivity, innovation, and collaboration, supported by the firm’s Co-Chief Knowledge Officers and Knowledge & Information Services team.

Key responsibilities
Enabling client service
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments, disseminate to practice teams, and assess impacts on knowledge products and business development.
  • Create and update internal guidance notes or checklists in collaboration with lawyers.
  • Identify priority areas within EU regulation and develop firm views on legal and market developments.
  • Capture insights from client mandates, identify trends, and incorporate them into internal products or training.
  • Encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing among lawyers, promoting use of knowledge systems and innovation tools.
Growing the firm and client relationships
  • Stay informed on EU regulatory developments, identify opportunities for business and profile enhancement, and foster external networks.
  • Create client-facing content such as blogs, alerts, and briefings, and contribute to publications.
  • Participate in client training, seminars, and industry consultations.
Developing legal skills
  • Serve as an internal advisor on capital markets and listed company regulations in the EU, providing guidance on complex legal points.
  • Design and deliver relevant training sessions for lawyers at all levels.
International outlook and wider role
  • Share information and connect with international colleagues.
  • Build relationships within the Knowledge function and across practice areas, especially in Continental Europe.
  • Coordinate work with colleagues to optimize outputs and manage risks.
Key requirements
Experience and qualifications
  • Qualified lawyer in an EU jurisdiction with a strong academic background.
  • Proven experience in a transactional practice focusing on capital markets (equity and/or debt) and corporate listings within the EU, either as a fee earner or a knowledge professional.
