The aim of this PhD is to rely on artificial intelligence to let the machine find complex selection criteria from the reanalyzes data. As pre-defined types of Low-Level Jets (LLJs) will be sought, supervised machine learning (SML) methods will be used, and a training ensemble will have to be built, covering the years for which Doppler lidar wind profiles are available in Dunkerque, and relying on WRF simulations to discriminate the LLJ types. The team already has experience in SML methods applied to atmospheric sciences.
The schedule of the PhD project is as follows: during the first semester, the student will update the literature review on LLJs and AI methods applied to atmospheric science data, building from the team’s previous work. In parallel, during the second semester, the PhD student will compare the Doppler lidar observations and high-resolution WRF simulations with ERA5 reanalyzes data. The second year will focus on building the classification algorithm and testing its performances. The final semester will serve for writing the PhD thesis.
The university doctoral school demands that the student publishes at least one research article in an international peer-reviewed scientific journal before allowing for the defense. This project has the potential to generate at least two articles.
This project takes place in the framework of the regional research program ECRIN and is related to the Interreg European project SALOME about wind energy.
The candidate should have a Master’s degree in Climate Sciences or Meteorology or a Master’s degree in Physics with a major in Environment or Climate. Skills in data analysis and computer programming (Matlab or equivalent) are mandatory. A good level in written and spoken English is necessary. French language is not necessary except if the candidate wishes to apply for casual teaching in parallel of the PhD.
The contract is for three years, starting from October 1st 2025. The monthly net salary is 1800 € before taxes. Provided the candidate’s spoken French level is good enough, casual teaching is also possible during all the PhD program.
All applications have to be validated by the security and defense officer of the university. This process may take up to two months, especially for non-European citizens.
The pre-selected candidates will be invited to attend a job interview via Zoom at the end of May. The university post-graduate school will also interview the candidate around mid-June.
Candidates are invited to send their application by email before May 19th 2025. The application should include a CV, the Master’s transcript of grades, a description of past research activities, a cover letter, and the name and contact details of two referees.
