The goal of this project is to study the effect of uniaxial strain on the structural and magnetic properties of a candidate for altermagnetism, Mn5Si3. This study combines laboratory techniques (specific heat, resistivity, ultrasound) and large scale facility techniques (neutron scattering at Institut Laue Langevin -ILL-). For some of these techniques, the project also involves to test and adapt existing strain cells to perform the required measurements. The candidate will work in strong collaboration with experts within Institut Néel, CEA Grenoble and the ILL. He will also strongly interact with a theorist at Institut Néel, expert in altermagnetism.
Principal tasks:
- Macroscopic measurements (specific heat, magnetization, resistivity)
- Ultrasound measurements in ambient conditions
- Neutron scattering measurements
- Writing and proposal submission for neutron scattering experiments
- Writing of experimental reports and papers
Secondary tasks:
- Tests and development of strain cells for neutron scattering
- Tests and development of strain cells for ultrasound measurements
The candidate will be part of the Magnetism and Superconductivity group at Institut Néel. This group involves more than twenty permanent researchers, and numerous students and postdoctoral associates. He will benefit from a stimulating and dynamic environment, with various scientific seminars organized at the Institute. He will also interact with scientists with diverse expertise within Institut Néel, CEA Grenoble and ILL.
The Institut NÉEL is a CNRS unit (UPR 2940) under agreement with the University Grenoble Alpes. The laboratory is related to the CNRS Physique. It is located in Grenoble, in the heart of a unique scientific, industrial and cultural environment. It is one of the largest French national research institutes for fundamental research in condensed matter physics enriched by interdisciplinary activities at the interfaces with chemistry, engineering and biology. It consists of 450 employees, including 175 researchers.
- Strong background in magnetism with notions in crystallography and phase transitions
- Experience in macroscopic characterization techniques required
- Experience in high pressure and/or uniaxial strain techniques highly appreciated
- Experience in neutron scattering appreciated but not mandatory
