Offer Description

Université Rennes 2 is the host institution of the ERC Advanced Grant project STAGE – From Stage to Data: The Digital Turn of Contemporary Performing Arts Historiography. At the intersection of historiography, digital humanities and the performing arts, STAGE explores how computational methods can contribute to a new understanding of mise en scène and creative processes in Europe since WWII.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in computer vision to join an interdisciplinary research project at the intersection of visual data analysis, cultural heritage, and digital historiography. The successful candidate will apply and adapt computer vision methods to the analysis of visual and audiovisual traces of performance. This is a full-time position starting in October 2025 for one year, renewable up to three years.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of novel methodologies for analysing visual and multimodal corpora (e.g. photographies and video recordings of performances). This position is designed for a DH researcher with proven technical skills , especially in Python , a strong interest in visual data and/or digital methods for cultural analysis, and ideally first publication experience.

The researcher will have the opportunity to participate in international conferences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Co-design and apply visual analysis workflows to explore patterns of staging, scenography, and performer presence in historical performance archives (e.g. similarity search, feature extraction, pattern detection, pose detection, dimensionality reduction)
  • Participate in corpus construction and visual annotation tasks
  • Collaborate with CS researchers on the adaptation of computer vision models to cultural data
  • Contribute to the conceptual articulation between visual features and performance studies or historiography
  • Engage in writing publications and presenting results in DH and interdisciplinary venues.
  • PhD in Digital Humanities, Media Studies, Cultural Heritage, or related disciplines
  • Strong proficiency in Python (including libraries such as NumPy, pandas, OpenCV, scikit-learn, etc.)
  • Experience with data-driven approaches to visual or multimodal corpora
  • Experience using version control systems such as git
  • Familiarity with digital annotation tools and/or IIIF environments is a plus
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow) is a plus
  • Ability to conduct high quality academic research, reflected in demonstrable outputs
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team
  • Languages: Excellent proficiency in English. French is a plus
