Offer Description

The Charles Gerhardt Institute Montpellier (UMR 5253) is a multidisciplinary research laboratory with five departments and nearly 500 staff members. The institute focuses on developing and characterizing complex materials with societal impact, especially in health, environment, and energy fields.

The research spans five areas: Molecular Materials, Macromolecular Materials, Porous and Hybrid Materials, Materials for Energy, and Theoretical Physical Chemistry. The goal is to design innovative functional materials by understanding intermolecular interactions and synthesis strategies.

One key focus is on urethane (or carbamate) functional groups, important in pharmaceuticals and materials like polyurethanes (PUs). The project aims to develop eco-friendly synthetic methods for urethanes via dehydrogenative couplings of alcohols and N-substituted formamides, replacing toxic isocyanates with more sustainable reagents derived from CO2.

The PhD tasks include designing and characterizing organic ligands and copper complexes, evaluating their catalytic properties, applying these catalysts to synthesize pharmaceutical intermediates and PUs, and studying the mechanisms involved. Candidates should have a solid background in molecular chemistry, with experience in catalysis or coordination chemistry preferred. Skills in collaboration, communication, and scientific curiosity are also important.
