As part of the "Equality towards and in higher education in Europe" chair, Rennes 2 University is recruiting a research engineer in education and training sciences, specialising in the sociology of digital uses and analysis of professional activity.
The position is part of a comparative study project on how European universities implement the EHEA recommendations for equal access and success in higher education. The research project includes a quantitative component (secondary analysis of data and completion of a questionnaire) followed by a qualitative component (interviews). The Chair of Junior Professor is funded for four years by the National Research Agency. The field for the surveys will be the universities of the European alliance EMERGE, of which Rennes 2 university is a part.
The main objective of this research engineer position is to analyse the use of digital tools and artificial intelligence in educational devices and professional practices in higher education. The aim is to highlight, on the one hand, the experiences of students and teachers and, on the other, the institutional strategies put in place within the framework of the guidelines of the EEES (European Higher Education Area) on equal access to higher education and student success.
Activities
The candidate will take part in the project’s four workpackages (literature review and theoretical framework, quantitative survey, qualitative survey, dissemination) and develop a research axis on:
• Universities’ institutional strategies in the face of digital innovations and AI challenges, in line with European recommendations;
• The evolution of teaching practices and academic missions as a result of digital transformations, especially AI;
• The appropriation of digital tools and AI by university teachers and students.
Their missions will include participating in:
• A review of the literature in sociology of digital uses and analysis of activity;
• The development of survey tools (observations, interviews, analysis of digital tracks);
• The processing and analysis of data collected (quantitative and qualitative), in particular the analysis of professional practices related to digital tools with a view to equality between students;
• The exploitation of results (reports, scientific papers, participation in symposia).

Skills/Qualifications
Candidates are asked to hold:
• A PhD in Education and Training Sciences (or related);
• Expertise in the sociology of digital uses and analysis of professional activity;
• Good knowledge of university transformation dynamics and equality policies in higher education;
• A minimum C1 level in English (working in a European comparative framework);
• A minimum C1 level in French (working on site at Rennes 2 with French-speaking colleagues);
• Ability to work independently as well as collaborate as part of an international team;
• Good knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods;
• Ability to write summaries, articles and scientific reports;
• Knowledge of compliance with ethical and regulatory principles relating to investigations and personal data in the field of research;
• Ability to integrate within the life of the laboratory (participation in seminars, scientific events, etc.).
Rectuitment date: 1 September 2025 for a period of 6 months (possibility of extending the contract depending on the availability of funds from the grant)

Rennes 2 University is the most important research and higher education centre in arts, literature, languages, humanities and social sciences of western France.
