Offer Description

The Team FORECAST from Sorbonne University, Inserm in Paris is looking for a highly motivated postdoc with expertise in Pharmacoepidemiology.

Scientific goal

Assessing the benefit-risk balance of treatment is crucial in medicine to select the most appropriate treatment for patients. This process faces major challenges, how to implement evidence in real time to guide treatment choice and how to summarize efficacy and safety outcomes to patients and clinicians, while incorporating patient preferences. Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) affect 3 million residents in Europe. New advanced therapies have been recently approved, but in the absence of head-to-head randomized controlled trials (RCT), data are lacking to position each drug in the therapeutic management. Multiple types of real-world data (RWD) sources are available to assess the effect of treatment, but each type has its proper strengths and limitations. Linking multiple RWD sources can overcome limitations and leverage the strengths of each data source. We recently emulated clinical trials supporting the use of RWD to assess treatment effectiveness and safety in IBD.

Based on the linkage of nationwide healthcare databases, electronic health records, and a prospective cohort of IBD patients, the aims of the FORECAST project are (i) to validate algorithms identifying IBD characteristics and outcomes in nationwide healthcare databases, (ii) to emulate head-to-head clinical trials comparing advanced therapies in IBD, (iii) to incorporate trials findings and patient preferences in a clinical decision support system for IBD patients and clinicians, whose impact will be assessed by a pragmatic RCT nested in nationwide healthcare databases.

The FORECAST project is based on the linkage of three sources of RWD: (1) the French nationwide healthcare databases (Système National des Données de Santé [SNDS]) including 250,000 IBD patients; (2) EHR with the Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris Clinical Data Warehouse (EDS AP-HP) including 35,000 IBD patients; (3) IBD dedicated cohort with the SUVIMIC database including 10,000 IBD patients.

The successful applicant will work in a research team headed by Dr Julien Kirchgesner in Saint-Antoine Research Center in the heart of Paris and in close collaboration with the Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI). The position is vacant from July 2025 on a full-time basis and is integrated in an ambitious ERC-funded project.

Responsibilities

The applicant will be in charge of several projects involving the validation of identification algorithms in the French nationwide healthcare databases, the emulation of target trials comparing the effectiveness and safety of treatment, and the development of the clinical decision support system. The applicant will also bring his/her expertise to other lab members as well as external collaborators.

Qualifications

We are seeking a candidate with a Ph.D., M.D., (or equivalent) with training in pharmacoepidemiology and a good experience in analyzing real-world data. Prior experience working with and analyzing large databases (administrative claims healthcare data, electronic health records) using R and/or Python is preferred.

This position requires a highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills and a strong track record. We seek a candidate with strong methodological and programming skills.

The applicant should be proficient in written and spoken English.

What to expect

We are offering to work in an innovative interdisciplinary, well-funded and scientifically stimulating environment located in a very attractive area of Paris. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to draft and publish several scientific manuscripts based on his/her results, and to significantly expand his/her expertise, network and track record.

The initial employment contract will be for up to 3 years with the possibility to apply for a permanent position.

Besides the PI (Julien Kirchgesner), the post-doctoral fellow will interact with senior scientists, other post docs, PhD students, and data scientists. He/she will also interact with other labs in France and abroad. The candidate will have to achieve the aims of the study and will have to regularly present the results to the partners involved.

Qualified candidates should e-mail before May 31th 2025 a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and list of three references to Dr Julien Kirchgesner at Julien.kirchgesner@gmx.com with “Pharmacoepidemiology Postdoc application” in the title of the e-mail.
