Amines are highly valuable industrial compounds, widely used in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, solvents, detergents, and polymer precursors. As the need to reduce our dependence on fossil resources becomes increasingly urgent, the transformation of biomass into high-value products is a key challenge and particularly the synthesis of bio-based amines.
This PhD project aims to develop efficient, environmentally benign homogeneous catalysts for the amination of bio-based polyols through hydrogen autotransfer reactions, a sustainable approach producing only water as a by-product. The work will focus on designing and synthesizing a library of bio-sourced organometallic complexes based on earth-abundant, low-toxicity metals such as copper and nickel. These catalysts will be tailored with bio-based ligands.
The goal is to create a catalysis system (substrates, catalyst, solvent) fully aligned with green chemistry principles, aiming for high bio-based carbon content and minimal environmental impact. Particular attention will be paid to reaction selectivity, substrate solubility, and the fine-tuning of catalytic properties through ligand and complex design.
The ideal candidate should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in chemistry with a background in organic chemistry and/or catalysis. Previous experience in synthetic chemistry, including under inert atmosphere, is a plus but not mandatory. Familiarity with analytical techniques such as NMR or HPLC is desirable. The candidate is expected to be rigorous, motivated, and enthusiastic about experimental work.
