Offer Description

As part of the European CORRASBlue project, Coastal Corrosion Risk Management through Digital twin model for a Sustainable Blue Economy, the LaSIE and LIENSs laboratories from La Rochelle University are looking for a Doctor in biocorrosion for a period of 30 months.

The main objective of this impact-focused project is thus to develop easily accessible, novel digital twin (DT) models for marine corrosion prediction and management, including microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), driven by state-of-the-art sensing infrastructure tools. The project aims to provide an open interface for ongoing maritime and marine engineering projects. Data-based modelling will be complemented by advancing the development of sustainable mitigation strategies. Project goals will be achieved through co-creation between project partners from public and private sectors, in direct liaison with industrial and regulatory stakeholders. Consequently, the data and results from this project shall be available as input for state-of-the-art corrosion engineering at all stakeholder levels at a Pan-European scale, including public administrations that need input for planning and managing maritime resources and infrastructure development companies of all sizes.

We aim to produce a highly sophisticated data-integration system compassing:

  • Assessment and prediction of materials performance in selected EU sea basins.
  • Review of available biotic and abiotic mitigation strategies on marine infrastructure sustainability.
  • Holistic system thinking for best practice of current corrosion monitoring technologies (sensors/tools).
  • A digital twin data-driven model system for marine corrosion control explicitly incorporating biological life due to seawater warming.
  • Digital, sustainable, economic, standardized, and long-lasting ‘green’ anti-corrosion solutions to reduce carbon footprints and environmental impact of current practices.

The outcome of this project will contribute to increasing the lifetime of assets and providing innovative, sustainable mitigation solutions with reduced environmental impact. It will also offer an accurate DT model for the management of inspection and maintenance activities, adding sustainable value to the European blue economy through joint development between project partners and relevant industrial and regulatory stakeholders. Activity in CORRASBlue will thus naturally increase the export of sophisticated technology goods from the European Economic Area.

The CORRASBlue consortium encompasses multi-disciplinary and cross-sectoral experts across 20 partners, 10 countries and 3 sea basses (Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and North Sea).

Your tasks in this project:

The post-doc will be involved in the 7 Working Party (WP) of the project but mainly in:

WP3: System Design and Architecture - Objective:Define the systems to be modelled and establish the data acquisition and management framework necessary for implementing DT with a focus on marine and coastal conditions.

WP4: Data Collection and Integration - Objective:Develop an organized and interactive database covering relevant annual data from the EU basins on marine corrosion (corrosion rate of unprotected metals), corrosion protection methods performance (resistant alloy behaviour, coatings ageing rate, cathodic protection efficiency), biofouling (antifouling index), seawater critical parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, TDS, tidal activity, depth, local biota). Prepare harmonized and usable input data for the DT and A.I models.

WP6:Validation and Optimization – Objective:Validate and optimize the DT model in real-world marine environments, ensuring its reliability for corrosion risk prediction and management. The validation process will focus on field tests, real-time updates, and the model’s ability to provide actionable insights for maintenance decision-making

Experimental work:

  • In corrosion:

A part of the work will be to develop an experimental platform to immerge corrosion coupons for in-situ electrochemistry measurements to evaluate the corrosion. After different time of immersion, corrosion layer will be analyzed by microscopy, micro-Raman spectrometry, XRD and SEM-EDS. Corrosion rate will be obtained by electrochemistry and weight loss measurements and by Laser Profilometry (OSP).

  • In microbiology/molecular biology:

The aim is to analyze the biofouling associated with corrosion product layers using metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approaches. The post-doc will have to sample part of the corrosion layer to analyze the micro and macro fouling that develop on the coupons. Then he will extract the microorganisms DNA and RNA. Sequencing will be carried out on an external sequencing platform. Then the post doc will be able to perform biofinformatics analysis of the data (sequence assembly, taxonomic assignment and functional annotation). The expression of targeted genes involved in biocorrosion ccould also be monitored by RT-qPCR.

Data collection work:

The post-doc will actively participate to the data collection relative to biocorrosion and interact with partners to take part of the digital twin model.

Your profile

The candidate should have a PhD degree in Microbiology/Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Materials Science or related disciplines with a deep scientific curiosity in bacteria-materials interactions.

  • Proven ability to work independently and manage scientific and industry-related projects efficiently within an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Hands-on experience in bacterial handling, DNA extraction, microbiologic and molecular biology technics including bio informatics.
  • Hands-on experience in corrosion, electrochemistry, analysis of materials
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to actively bring in scientific expertise and ideas.
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English is essential.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate who is not only technically skilled but also eager to engage in cutting-edge research and contribute meaningfully to our dynamic team.

Applications must be received no later than 15th July 2025.

Application procedure
Send CV, motivation letter and reference letter to Marc JEANNIN ( marc.jeannin@univ-lr.fr ). If your profile is interesting, we will propose you an interview.

Formalities and salary range
