The ideal candidate for this role is an empathetic and organized person with a passion for helping people. This individual is caring and supportive with strong technical skills and driven by the impact the YWCA has on the community.
Purpose: The purpose of the Housing Coordinator position is to support clients with obtaining secure housing prior to leaving the Shelter. This position is also responsible for overseeing the interest free grants or loans program provided by the government. The Housing Coordinator will work alongside the support workers to ensure that clients are empowered to take steps towards re-building their lives.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist current and past clients with creating a plan to obtain long-term housing with any potential resources required for continued success. This includes providing resources, support, and education on community living and housing options.
- Meet with clients to assess their needs in terms of housing type, location, and other information.
- Empower clients as they move through the process of becoming independent and living in the great community.
- Oversee and manage the program providing grants or interest free loans for housing to people escaping gender-based violence. This includes providing information, assisting with applications, and acting as a liaison and educator on the program to clients in need.
- Connect with rural communities regarding programs and resources available to clients who are moving from shelter to community living.
- Follow-up with and communicate effectively with clients in the transition to community living process.
- Update and maintain accurate client files and logs.
Strengths & Knowledge
- The ability to maintain a case management system with all clients.
- Knowledge of other supporting resources in the community to assist with the transition of leaving the shelter.
- Strong mentorship skills with the ability to teach and coach.
- The ability to approach situations without judgement and meet people where they are.
- The ability to make connections, build trust, and maintain positive relationships with clients.
- Strong IT skills with the ability to work confidently on a number of technical platforms.
- Strong attention to detail skills that support clients in paperwork and completing documents.
Qualifications & Experience
- An education in Social Service Work or a combination of education and experience related to work in Residential Support Services.
- A current Emergency First-Aid and CPR Certificate.
- Other related education in crisis intervention, domestic violence, addictions.
- Satisfactory Adult and Child Abuse Registry and Criminal Record Check.
Working Conditions
Physical: This position is office-based at a sit-down desk. It requires meeting clients in the community or in the Shelter.
Mental Health: This position will be exposed to crisis situations such as witnessing women and children in distress/crisis.
