The City of Lewiston, ME is seeking a Highway Worker to perform a wide range of street, drainage, and sidewalk maintenance and construction tasks.

You’ll operate trucks and equipment for roadway repairs, assist in winter operations, and help ensure safety and efficiency in daily public works projects. A high school diploma and 3 years in heavy construction are required, with license requirements as stated.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED plus 3 years in heavy construction.
  • Valid State of Maine Class C driver’s license; obtain Class B CDL within 6 months.
  • Winter operations experience ideal (snowplowing, sanding, maintenance).

Responsabilités

  • Perform street, drainage, parking lot, and sidewalk maintenance and construction.
  • Mark and paint crosswalks and traffic lines; set up signs per MDOT/MUTCD.
  • Record time and materials; may lead crews and assist winter operations.
  • Participate in city-wide event setup and holiday lighting removal.

Highway Worker

Accepting applicants for HIGHWAY WORKER with the City’s Public Works Department. Applications are available from the Human Resources Department or online at www.lewistonmaine.gov.

  • Barg. Unit: AFSCME- Public Works Unit
  • Status: Full-Time 40+ hours/week
  • Grade: 3/4 [$23.45-28.54/hour] depending on license/experience.
SUMMARY

The Highway Worker performs a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks, operates trucks and other related equipment as needed for necessary roadway repairs and projects.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent GED, plus three (3) years experience in heavy construction. Must have a valid State of Maine Class C driver’s license. Must obtain Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within first six (6) months of employment. Background in winter operations, including plowing, sanding, equipment upkeep/maintenance, open space maintenance, turf and game lining and set-up, pool and water element maintenance and related operations is ideal.

WORK ACTIVITIES

Perform a variety of street, drainage, parking lot and sidewalk maintenance and construction projects. Mark and paint crosswalks, stop lines, and other traffic control markings. Set up routine and emergency traffic control signage displaying working knowledge of Dig-Safe laws, MDOT and MUTCD requirements and other safety regulations. Must be able to complete accurate records of time and materials used. May perform construction and paving inspections. May, at times, act as a crew leader for various street and sidewalk maintenance operations. Participate in lawn repair, loam work, and winter operations such as snowplowing and snow removal. May perform carpentry and/or masonry work. Will take part in ongoing training regarding equipment skills and other operations. Participate in City-wide event set up and tear down. Install and remove holiday lighting/decorations. Interact with public in a courteous and tactful manner. Must be available for emergency operations and overtime, as required. Able to follow oral and written instruction, and perform other duties as assigned.
