Under the general supervision of the school principal, the individual would perform duties of guidance counseling in a public school setting. An employee in this role works as a member of the school staff and is responsible for providing comprehensive guidance to all students, focusing on self-acceptance, decision-making, and effective communication to improve human relations skills. Classroom guidance is provided to teachers to assist in areas such as career education, career decision-making, study and test-taking skills, building self-esteem, and establishing positive teacher and parent involvement.
Candidates should have considerable knowledge of federal and local laws related to school counseling, counseling theories, departmental policies, regulations, and procedures applicable to school counseling programs. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, excellent communication skills, ability to collaborate effectively, maintain accurate records, demonstrate patience, and exercise sound judgment are essential.
