Job Description for Guidance Counselor

The following position requires you to be certified with the Virgin Islands Board of Education. Please ensure you are certified to teach in the United States Virgin Islands prior to applying for this position. Under the general supervision of the school principal, the individual would perform duties of guidance counseling in a public school setting. An employee in this role works as a member of the school staff and is responsible for providing comprehensive guidance to all students, focusing on self-acceptance, decision-making, and effective communication to improve human relations skills. Classroom guidance is provided to teachers to assist in areas such as career education, career decision-making, study and test-taking skills, building self-esteem, and establishing positive teacher and parent involvement.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist parents, teachers, and administrators in relating positively to students by improving human relation skills.
  • Conferring with teachers to develop management strategies to meet the needs of individual students.
  • Counseling students individually and in small groups on personal, social, educational, and career concerns.
  • Remain available to students for individual and group counseling to promote personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
  • Help identify potential dropouts and consult with teachers on alternative teaching strategies and programs.
  • Assist students in evaluating career interests and choices.
  • Participate in district-promoted in-service training programs.
  • Maintain knowledge of testing programs and interpret test results to students, parents, and school personnel.
  • Encourage parental visits to increase awareness of available student programs.
  • Consult with psychologists, special education personnel, and other specialists concerning students with specific learning, emotional, or other problems.
  • Participate in developing special programs for the school.
  • Provide classroom guidance activities based on needs assessments.
  • Conduct career and educational planning activities.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Guidance and Counseling.
  • Possession of a valid certification by the Virgin Islands Board of Education in the relevant content area.
Position Factors

Candidates should have considerable knowledge of federal and local laws related to school counseling, counseling theories, departmental policies, regulations, and procedures applicable to school counseling programs. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, excellent communication skills, ability to collaborate effectively, maintain accurate records, demonstrate patience, and exercise sound judgment are essential.
