Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Environmental Services (EVS) Technician position performs a variety of general as well as moderately complex cleaning tasks in assigned specialty areas to provide a safe and attractive environment for patients, guests, and staff. This position maintains environmental and infection control standards within established policies and procedures. In addition, the EVS Technician position follows Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) standards for turnover and terminal cleaning of procedure rooms. This position works with floor maintenance equipment and chemicals as well as handling and interaction with hazardous materials for appropriate disposal, conference room set ups and linen distribution, collection and tracking, as appropriate.

Responsibilities

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responds promptly to requests for directions and information from patients, staff, and visitors. Maintains a clean environment for healing by addressing assignments promptly and communicating facility or patient-related issues to management as appropriate. Performs efficient room cleaning processes to facilitate timely patient admissions.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Follows department processes for room cleaning and discharge inspections with the goal of meeting or exceeding HCAHPS cleanliness scores. Achieves discharge, daily room cleaning, and assigned area turnaround times. Tracks and notifies management of safety and repair needs for equipment during discharge activities. Follows policies, procedures, safety rules, and OSHA standards; corrects minor safety hazards and observes infection control precautions. Performs cleaning/maintenance for all floor types, collects, transports and disposes of solid/biohazard waste, uses specialty cleaning procedures in areas such as surgical or isolation zones, and handles clean/soiled linen with quality assurance checks.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Uses and stores chemicals, paper goods, supplies, and equipment properly; reports and assesses wasteful practices. Manages time effectively and prioritizes daily tasks to minimize overtime.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assumes responsibility for growth and development; participates in continuing education and EVS governance. Engages coworkers in learning opportunities aligned with business objectives and fosters a positive teaching environment.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

High School diploma or equivalent (GED, homeschool equivalency, partial or full post-secondary education, etc.).

WORK EXPERIENCE

One year of experience.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED

DOT HAZMAT Certification (DOT) – US Department Of Transportation Hazardous Materials Certification within 90 days. Driver License – State Licensure.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Demonstrates the skills and competencies to safely perform the job, with ongoing assessments. Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English necessary for safety-critical activities. Ability to communicate with patients, physicians, families, and coworkers with a customer-service focus. Ability to access information within the department and hospital system, multi-task, work with minimal supervision, and use housekeeping equipment and chemicals safely. Ability to effectively communicate in a customer-service-oriented manner.

SUPPLEMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

WORK ATTIRE: Uniforms (Scrubs) required; other department-approved attire as applicable. On-Call: No. Travel: May require local travel within the Houston Metropolitan area in some roles.
